NOTRE DAME
DC fired SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Hours after an embarrassing 38-35 home loss to Duke, Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly has fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder following a 1-3 start.
The school tweeted a new release Sunday saying VanGorder is being replaced by defensive analyst Greg Hudson. Hudson previously served as defensive coordinator at Purdue, East Carolina and Minnesota, as well as assistant head coach and linebackers coach at Florida State.
The Irish’s defense is giving up 33.5 points a game through four games, which is on pace to be the most points in school history. The school record for points surrendered per game is 29.2, set in 2014, VanGorder’s first year as defensive coordinator.
Duke, which managed a combined 27 points in losses to Wake Forest and Northwestern, scored 28 points in the first half Saturday against the Irish. Students chanted for VanGorder to be fired during the game.
FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL
Turner terminated MIAMI — Florida International fired coach Ron Turner on Sunday.
The Panthers made the move one day after the team fell to 0-4 this season with a 53-14 loss to Central Florida.
FIU has won only 13 of its last 53 games, going back to the final game of the 2011 season. The Panthers were 10-30 in parts of four seasons under Turner, who replaced Mario Cristobal before the 2012 season.
Defensive coordinator Ron Cooper is taking over as interim coach.
The Panthers play host to rival Florida Atlantic on Saturday.
