After officer slain, police kill gunman

-

SEATTLE — A Washington state police officer responding to a domestic-violence call was fatally shot Wednesday and other officers were shot at as they removed him from a home, beginning an 11-hour standoff during which, authorities say, the gunman used two children as shields.

Tacoma Police Chief Donald Ramsdell said Thursday that the slain officer, Reginald “Jake” Gutierrez, 45, had been with the department since 1999 and had extensive experience dealing with domestic cases.

During the standoff, authorities said, a deputy got “a clear shot” early Thursday and killed the gunman as officers rescued an 8-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy.

The shooting of the officer occurred Wednesday afternoon after a woman approached animal-control officers and said her husband had locked her out of their house and taken her phone. The officers called police.

Ramsdell said Gutierrez and his partner went into the home, and Gutierrez was shot as he headed up the stairs of the home. Gutierrez’s partner fired back and ran from the house, taking the wife to safety.
