Technology Waterloo

-

I believe this era of instant communication ultimately will lead to our decline.

People no longer take the time to think about and digest information they receive. For many years print media was a good source of information. Readers had the opportunity to learn in-depth about local, regional, national, and world events. We were a society that was informed, whereas today we are bombarded with tweets, instant messages, and videos going viral.

Emotionally driven instant communication is devoid of the thought process that should precede our response. We react with emotion as opposed to using our intellect and judgment. We no longer rationalize, gather facts, solicit opinions, and reach balanced conclusions. We bury our noses in our electronic devices, allowing them to control us. They take over the dinner table and family gatherings.

We have lost control of ourselves, our thinking, and our lives to technology that we serve; it does not always serve us. MARK BERNTHAL Bella Vista
