Little Rock schools to begin registration for 2017-18 year

- CYNTHIA HOWELL

Student registration for the 2017-18 school year in the Little Rock School District begins Monday and will conclude Dec. 16 at the student registration office, 501 Sherman St., near the intersection of East Capitol Avenue and Interstate 30.

Student Registration Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Open-enrollment registration is for families whose children will be entering kindergarten or will otherwise be new students to the district. The registration period is also for current families who want to enroll their children at Forest Heights STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy for kindergarten through eighth grade, or at the district’s eight special-program magnet schools.

The elementary magnet schools are Booker Arts, Carver Basic Skills/Math Science, Gibbs International Studies/Foreign Language and Williams Traditional schools. The middle-level magnet schools are Dunbar Gifted and Talented/International Studies and Horace Mann Arts and Sciences middle schools. Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School and the international studies program at Central High are the high school magnet programs.

Student registration forms are available on the district’s website: lrsd.org. Parents are asked to bring two completed copies of the application packets with them to the student registration office to expedite the enrollment process.

Registration for the district’s free, full-day prekindergarten programs for 3- and 4-year-old children also will also be held Monday through Dec. 16, at Woodruff Early Childhood Center, 3010 W. 7th St. The early childhood education programs are housed in most of the district’s elementary schools and in early childhood education centers throughout the district.

Students who are already attending a Little Rock School District school do not have to register this month for the coming year. They will roll up to their attendance zone school.

This year’s class of prekindergarten pupils who will rise to kindergarten also will roll up to their attendance zone school.

The open-enrollment registration period is not a firstcome, first-served system. All applications submitted during the open-enrollment period will have equal consideration.

More information on the registration process is available at the student registration link to the district’s Web page.
