A new tone

- THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

President Trump rose to the occasion last week with an address to a joint session of Congress that delighted supporters, reassured some critics and signaled economic policies that sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average up more than 300 points the next day to close over 21,000 for the first time.

In a measured and calm tone, Trump delivered a more inclusive speech that laid out the goals of his presidency and the principles that will guide his administration. That inclusivity must last longer than one night’s speech.

Trump said his economic team is working on “historic tax reform that will reduce the tax rate on our companies” along with “massive tax relief for the middle class.” He promised resources and support for the military, including veterans. He sketched a vision of “gleaming” new infrastructure, a “rebirth of hope, safety and opportunity” for inner cities, and a new health care law that lowers costs while preserving protections for Americans with pre-existing conditions.

Trump promised secure borders and also proposed changes to the system of legal immigration, calling for a “meritbased” standard that considers the ability of people to support themselves financially.

He vowed an aggressive policy to “demolish and destroy” the Islamic State, which he called “a network of lawless savages that have slaughtered Muslims and Christians, and men, women and children of all faiths and beliefs.”

The speech was full of big promises, now he must deliver.

Repeatedly Trump called on members of Congress to work with him. “Why not join forces to finally get it done?” he asked. At another point, he called on lawmakers to “work together to achieve an outcome that has eluded our country for decades.” He said problems can be solved, but it will “require us to work past the differences of party.”

At a lunch the next day with Republican congressional leaders, Texas GOP Sen. John Cornyn explained: “We are getting organized, getting prepared. The only way we’re going to get this done is to work closely together.”

To keep good on his promises and unite a very divided nation, Trump will need to ensure Democrats are at the table. If he is able to accomplish that, he may be able to make good on much of what he spoke of Tuesday evening.
