WEDNESDAY Whale of a movie
The University of Arkansas at Little Rock will host the first public screening of Barrow: A Village of Whalers from the Jeanie Greene Heartbeat Alaska Collection, noon Wednesday, Room 535, Ottenheimer Library, UALR, 2801 S. University Ave.
The documentary looks at the centuries- old practice of Inupiat villagers in northernmost Alaska working together to harvest the bowhead whale and its importance in the Inupiat lifestyle. Greene, an Inupiat journalist, established the television show Heartbeat Alaska in 1990. The Sequoyah center, headquartered at UALR, acquired her collection in 2014.
Erin Fehr, an archivist with the Sequoyah National Research Center, will conduct a short post- screening question- and- answer session. Admission is free. Call ( 501) 569- 8336 or email ehfehr@ualr.edu.
THURSDAY Profiling pastor
Quinton Dixie, associate professor of history and religious studies at Indiana- Purdue University Fort Wayne, will present a program titled “E. C. Morris’ Centennial,” a look at the longtime pastor of Helena’s Centennial Baptist Church, 5: 30 p. m. Thursday at Beth El Heritage Hall, 406 Perry St., Helena- West Helena. Morris was pastor of the church from 1887 until his death in 1922. He was also president and founder of the National Baptist Convention.
