HOT SPRINGS — Senior Kristen Wiseman scored 6 of her 13 points in overtime as the Pocahontas Lady Redskins rallied for a 54-46 victory over the Pottsville Lady Apaches in the Class 4A girls championship game at Bank of the Ozarks Arena on Saturday night.
MVP Ashlyn Ellis scored 22 points for the Lady Redskins (33-3), who claimed their first state title since 1996.
Pottsville (21-12) led by as much as 25-19 early in the third quarter, but the Lady Apaches were 6 of 25 from the floor in the second half, allowing Pocahontas to post its come-from-behind victory.
Pottsville led 36-33 entering the fourth quarter, but two free throws by 6-0 junior Mikayla Kirk and a three-point play by Ellis gave Pocahontas its first lead since midway through the second quarter.
Pottsville regained a 41-39 lead with 1:58 left in regulation on a 15-footer by junior guard Madi Rust. Pocahontas tied it 41-41 at the 1:02 mark on two free throws by Kirk, who would finish with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Pottsville held the ball until the final 10 seconds, but Aspen Campbell missed a short jumper. Wiseman grabbed the rebound for Pocahontas with 8.6 seconds left. After a timeout, Ellis attempted a running 20-footer but her shot was wide left to send the game into an extra period.
Pocahontas outscored Pottsville 13-5 in overtime.
Pottsville led for 25:06 compared to 4:26 for Pocahontas.
Wiseman’s free throw 12 seconds into the extra period put Pocahontas on top for good. She added a field goal 38 seconds later, and after hitting another free throw with 2:41 left, she received a pass from Kirk for a pointblank shot that gave the Lady Redskins a 48-43 advantage.
Wiseman finished with a game-high 15 rebounds, 11 on the defensive end.
Pocahontas was 21 of 27 from the free-throw line, including 8 of 12 in the overtime. Pottsville was 7 of 11 from the line.
Junior Aspen Campbell led Pottsville with 14 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Junior Skylar Campbell scored 8 of her 10 points in the second half. Sophomore Abby James added eight points and led the Lady Apaches with seven rebounds.
Pocahontas outrebounded Pottsville 41-27, including a 2713 advantage on the defensive end.
