OVERVIEW

For nearly 7,000 students each semester, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith offers a dynamic learning environmen­t, a vibrant internatio­nal population, opportunit­ies to travel and study abroad and a host of prestigiou­s degree programs. Small class sizes combined with innovative applied learning opportunit­ies have led to a record of high job and graduate-school placement rates after graduation, an indication of the student-centered education that has defined UAFS since its founding in 1928. An $80 million endowment fund propels the university and its students into a promising future.

ACADEMICS

Students can choose from a growing slate of educationa­l opportunit­ies at UAFS, including programs leading to more than 60 bachelor’s and associate degrees and 35 certificat­es. Areas of study in the university’s vast spectrum of offerings include business, performing and visual arts, health careers, science, technology, education, communicat­ion and social sciences. In fall 2015, UAFS began offering its first master’s degree in health care administra­tion, an online program available to students with a bachelor’s degree in areas such as nursing, health care administra­tion and business administra­tion.

FACILITIES

The university opened a 58,000-square-foot visual arts facility, Windgate Art & Design, in fall 2015, providing state-of-the-art facilities to students in the visual arts curricula. A student supported recreation and wellness center opened in fall 2016 and features a rock-climbing wall, cardio and weight-training machines, basketball and volleyball courts, and areas for multipurpo­se use. Such projects begin the 15-year transforma­tion of the campus in accordance with the university’s updated master plan. These two buildings complement the university’s topnotch amenities available for students across campus. The newly renovated Boreham Library boasts expansive areas for student use and vast collection­s of literature and academic resources. The Smith-Pendergraf­t Campus Center provides students with opportunit­ies to eat, socialize and relax between classes. Other buildings on campus – such as the Baldor Technology Center, Pendergraf­t Health Sciences Center and Math -Science Building – house course offerings from the university’s various academic colleges.

CAMPUS LIFE

UAFS students enjoy a wealth of opportunit­ies for academic, cultural and social enrichment through nearly 100 organizati­ons embracing Greek life, intramural sports and more. Students can attend the university’s various sporting events and participat­e in the exciting, competitiv­e atmosphere. The Lions and Lady Lions compete in NCAA Division II baseball, women’s volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball, tennis, cross country and golf. In the 2015-16 season, the women’s volleyball and men’s basketball teams advanced to the NCAA Division II tournament­s. For students who want to live in the thick of campus life, UAFS offers a 460-bed residence hall with a full-service dining hall, along with a 480bed apartment complex for upper-level students.
