STUDENT SUCCESS

When Chancellor Karla Hughes became the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s 12th CEO in 2016, she launched a Student Success Initiative with a long-term goal to improve retention and graduation rates.

The first phase of that initiative will begin to take shape this summer with the construction of a Student Success Center, which will house elements of the registrar’s office, financial aid and cashier’s office, as well as admissions and recruiting, housing, career counseling, academic advising and a bookstore. University officials are also working with Aramark Food Services to consider several restaurant and dining options for the facility.

Other campus improvements coming soon include renovations to Horsfall Hall, a women’s residence hall, and the creation of a Learning Commons in the Taylor Library and Technology Center, which will include workspaces to connect students with technology and create spaces for faculty to work with students and extend learning beyond the traditional classroom. Learning commons are becoming popular in academic and research libraries as a way to share space for information technology, remote or online education, tutoring, collaboration, content creation, meetings and reading or study.

“I want UAM to be a model, open-access institution, equal to or better than its peer institutions,” Hughes said. “Our focus will be on improved student retention and graduation rates, which will ultimately result in the success of our students. That’s why we’re in business.”

As one of the few remaining open-enrollment institutions in the region, UAM is proud of its heritage of offering educational opportunities to the people of Arkansas. Founded in 1909 as the Fourth District Agricultural School, it became Arkansas A&M College in 1928 and joined the University of Arkansas System on July 1, 1971. As its name evolved, the school remained committed to meeting the challenges of higher education in the state and region.

ACADEMICS

Small classes and personal attention from a highly trained faculty separate UAM from larger institutions. The university currently offers a Bachelor of Science degree in 15 fields, a Bachelor of Arts degree in 10 major areas, a Bachelor of Applied Science, a Bachelor of Business Administration in two areas, a Bachelor of General Studies, a Bachelor of Music Education, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Social Work. UAM also offers seven master’s degrees – four in education and one each in forest resources, jazz studies and fine arts, as well as seven associate degrees and seven areas of preprofessional study.

UAM’s Colleges of Technology at Crossett and McGehee offer a variety of two-year programs and technical certificates to assist students who wish to pursue a fast track to the workforce.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

UAM has built a reputation for excellence in a number of academic disciplines. Graduates of its School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences have among the state’s higher acceptance rates to medical and pharmacy schools. The school’s jazz band has traveled the world and is recognized as one of the nation’s elite collegiate jazz ensembles, while its nursing graduates are in high demand throughout the region.

CAMPUS LIFE

UAM has more than 80 campus organizations that cover a variety of interests. The university’s intercollegiate-athletics program competes in the Great American Conference and fields teams in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, golf and women’s cross country. UAM’s softball team has won numerous honors for its performance both on the field and in the classroom, and the 2016 baseball team captured the school’s first GAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Central Region finals.
