TSgt. JOE W. BAKER, U.S.A.F. (Ret.), 86, of Jacksonvil­le passed away on April 12, 2017. He was born on January 12, 1931, in Memphis, Tenn., to the late George W. and Mineola (Holder) Baker. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Shelba Baker; son, James W. Baker; and brother, Gene P. Baker.

Joe was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonvil­le, Gideon’s Internatio­nal, and a Mason. He retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. Then worked nineteen years as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

Survivors include his wife, Marian Baker; two daughters, Carol J. Smith (Darryl), Shelia A. Griesheime­r; one son, David A. Baker; sister, Carolyn; grandchild­ren, Jeannie, Kathy, Amy, Jayson, Jimmy Lee, Casie, Bridgett, Kimberly, Christina, Jessica, Nichole, McKenzie, Joseph, Wesley, Melanie; numerous great-grandchild­ren; and two great-great grandchild­ren.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at Moore’s Jacksonvil­le Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Cliff Hutchins officiatin­g. –––––❖––––– GLORIA DEAN JOHNSON, 80, of Jacksonvil­le entered her heavenly home on April 11, 2017. She was born on February 20, 1937, in Ethel, Mississipp­i, to Collins and Vernice Proctor. Gloria loved life and serving the Lord, as is evident by the multitude of friends and church families that were so specially touched by her presence.

She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her husband, Wesley J. Johnson. She is survived by her sister, Margie S. Fritts of Jacksonvil­le, Arkansas, and her brother, Robert E. Proctor

(Kitten) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, two nieces, two nephews, two great-nieces, and two great-nephews. Rememberin­g her also is a very large church family and too many friends to mention.

–––––❖––––– ALICE FAYE McCLUNG VANECKO, 76, of Little Rock, Arkansas passed away April 11, 2017. She was born July 27, 1940 in Marshall, Arkansas to Randolph Leroy and Jewell Yancey McClung.

While in college, she met Andrew VanEcko. Alice and Andy were married July 5, 1962. She attended Arkansas Teachers College and then taught elementary students in Little Rock schools. Her patience and dedication, as a teacher, earned her numerous teaching awards throughout her career, including the distinctio­n of Teach of the Year, twice. She leaves behind a legacy of students who benefited from her passion for teaching and she was often stopped while shopping with big hugs from former students. Alice loved nothing more than spending time with family, whether it was days reminiscin­g with her sister, Bonnie, raising her boys, or playing games and reading stories with her grandchild­ren.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Andrew and her parents. Alice was a devoted wife and beloved mother. She is survived by her two sons, Randolph VanEcko (Jennifer) of Little Rock and Scott VanEcko (Traci) of Benton; four grandchild­ren, Cappel, Brendan, Emily and Cheyenne; her sister, Bonnie McClung Goodman of Marshall; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Alice’s quick smile and gentle presence will be missed by all. She was always a kind person and loving soul to all that knew her.

–––––❖––––– THELMA (HOWELL) WILSON, a follower of Christ for most of her 83 years on this earth, joined her eternal Father on April 10, 2017.

While her spirit is with her Lord, her physical presence will be sorely missed by her husband Bobby Lee Wilson; her daughter, Debra Renee McGohan (Larry); her son, Michael Lee Wilson (Jeanean); grandchild­ren, Michael Gene Wilson (Angela), Brock Aaron Wilson, and Lauren Wilson; her great-grandchild­ren, Michael Logan, Luke James, Hutch Walker and Hoyt Christian Wilson; her brothers, Dewey Howell (Elaine) and Wick Howell (Peggy); her sisters, Mary Agnes Caruthers (Virgil), Mamie Fite (Benny), Sue Watts (Herbert), and Dorothy Cato (Jack); and a host of friends. She is preceded in death by two brothers, Horace and Fay Dean Howell (Betty).

The blue-eyed blonde was blessed to the rather large family of Willis and Delsey Howell on June 16, 1933, was raised in Amity, Arkansas with four brothers and four sisters. She married Bobby Lee Wilson on April 18, 1951, moving to North Little Rock in 1954 and residing there with her family until her passing. She was a housewife raising her children until 1967, when she began working at a newly-opened Wal-Mart, the company’s 7th store and retired after 25 years at the same store. She was passionate about her work there and was a personal friend of Sam Walton.

Her great passions were Christ, her family, and her country. She was fiercely competitiv­e when she was a high school basketball player and later in life at dominos. We will always remember her fondly and love her always.

–––––❖––––– BENTON — Winston Dale Mize, age 85, of Benton passed away early on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. He was born July 13, 1931, to Olin and Mary Ruth Mize of Bauxite, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Mize, who was the love of his life and his best friend. He is also survived by his daughters, Brenda Mize of Little Rock, Robin Fuhrman (Bryant) of Little Rock, Paula Dahm (Mike) of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and grandchild­ren, Brian Dahm (Julia) and Beth Ballard (Ben), all from Pittsburgh, Pa. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Beth Davis, of Benton.

As a high school athlete with the Bauxite Miners, Dale was known as “Moose Mize.” He enjoyed football and held several state records in track and field. Dale was later inducted in the Bauxite Hall of Fame and then continued to serve on the Hall of Fame Committee.

After serving in the Army for two years, Dale had a long career with Alcoa. As a mechanical engineer, he held many managerial positions, which included assignment­s in Bauxite, Ark., Mobile, Ala., Kingston, Jamaica, and San Luis, Brazil.

Dale was a committed longterm member of First United Methodist Church of Benton and a member of the Covenant Sunday School Class. Dale enjoyed many things in life but his greatest joy was his time with his wife Peggy. Together they enjoyed family, church, dogs, golf, Razorback sports, and travel. Their last travel was a road trip to complete their goal of travel through all 50 states.

Later in life, Dale was known by his golfing buddies as “The Big Guy.” This nickname not only described his height, but truly described his heart. He was compassion­ate not only to his family and friends, but felt responsibi­lity to reach out within his church and community. The example he set as a husband, a father, a grandfathe­r, friend, and member of the community will influence many lives forever.

–––––❖––––– PINE BLUFF — Melba “Granny” Holcomb, 90, of Pine Bluff, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at her home. Mrs. Holcomb was born September 24, 1926 in Lawrence County, to Claud and Hattie Bell Greer.

She was reared and received her education in Lawrence and Greene Counties. She had lived in Michigan, Missouri and Arkansas with her husband Billy Joe Holcomb, who was a minister. They moved back to Pine Bluff in 1975.

She was a devoted pastor’s wife, a very talented musician, who sang and played a variety of musical instrument­s, and a Sunday School Teacher. Mrs. Holcomb was a born again Christian and a member of Watson Chapel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her sons, Bill W. (Brenda) Holcomb of Heber Springs, Mike R. (Dee) Holcomb, Terry G. (Brenda) Holcomb, and Danny J. (Karen) Holcomb, all of Pine Bluff; daughter-in-law, Beth Holcomb of White Hall; eight grandchild­ren; 13 great-grandchild­ren; two great-great-grandchild­ren; five step-great-grandchild­ren; sister, Freda Schleicher of Rochester Hills, Mich.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Reverend Bill J. Holcomb who died in 1990; son, Tommy Gale Holcomb; daughtersi­n-law, Patsy Armstrong Holcomb and Karen Duncan Holcomb; nine brothers and two sisters.

–––––❖––––– VILONIA — Earl Wayne Chaney, 74, of Vilonia, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 13, 2017. He was born September 8, 1942, in Marked Tree, Ark., to the late James William and Audrey Robinson Chaney. Earl was also preceded in death by his son, Jimmy.

Earl was of the Baptist Faith and was a veteran of the United States Army and served during the Vietnam Conflict. Earl was raised a Master Mason in Arizona, Member of Faulkner Lodge where he served as Worshipful Master and also served as Secretary for several years. Awarded Pillar of Solomon, District Deputy Grand Master District 10, Earl was also a member of the following Masonic Bodies, Alton Kol Grotto, Tucson, Ariz., and served as Monarch, Bendemeer Grotto, Little Rock, Ark., and served as Monarch, Fay Hempstead Chapter No. 144 and served as High Priest, Occidental Council No. 1 and served as Thrice Illustriou­s Master, Hugh De Payens Commander No. 1 and served as Commander, KYCH, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonr­y, Valley of Little Rock and was invested as a KCCH, Royal Order of Scotland, Red Cross of Constantin­e, St. Giles Conclave, Allied Masonic Degrees, Gil Christ Council No. 26, Knight Masons of the U.S.A., Arkansas Council No. 80, National Sojourners, Inc., Arkansas Chapter No. 166 and served as President, Heroes of 76 and served as Commander, York Rite College No. 142, and Societas Rosicrucia­na in Civitatibu­s Foederatis. He was a general contractor and owner of Chaney Building Company for 20 years in Tucson, Ariz., before returning back home to Arkansas. Earl enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family.

Earl is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frankie, son, Gary (Kelly), brother, Harold (Carla), brother-in-law, Alfred Rodgers, five grandchild­ren, Jason (Sarah), James, Jesse, Anna, and Megan (Kevryk), five great-grandchild­ren, Allison, Peyton, Brayden, Merryk, and Aiyanna, numerous nieces and nephews and a multitude of friends.
