100 YEARS AGO April 17, 1917

Formation of the Pulaski County Guard was given a big impetus at the mass meeting at the courthouse last night. More than 500 persons attended. Plans for meetings Thursday night and another Saturday afternoon were made. The Executive Committee reported that 800 signed applicatio­n blanks have been returned and that about 500 more will be returned in a few days. They expect the total enrollment to reach 1,500.

50 YEARS AGO April 17, 1967

ARKADELPHI­A — Governor Rockefelle­r has pledged $25,000 to keep Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Nursing in operation, University officials announced Sunday. Dr. Ralph A. Phelps Jr., OBU president, and other officials had told the governor April 7 that the University might be forced to close its nursing school next fall for lack of money. Mr. Rockefelle­r’s pledge was made on a 1-for-2 matching basis and the University must raise another $50,000 in a “Nurses for Arkansas” campaign.

Reports that alleged hijacker Charles Lloyd Patterson Sr. of Batesville has been seen recently near his hometown are “credible,” according to Independen­ce County law enforcemen­t officials. However, the FBI said Thursday it is continuing to focus its search efforts in Texas. The airplane was found April 11 in Sulphur Springs, Texas. When Patterson hijacked the plane last week on a flight from Pine Bluff to Little Rock, he was on furlough from the state Department of Correction. Gov. Bill Clinton ordered the immediate suspension of all meritoriou­s furloughs after he learned of the incident.

CONWAY — A judge set bail at $5 million each Monday for three Florida men charged in Friday’s bank robbery in Greenbrier and subsequent getaway attempt. James Walker, 24, Johnta Q. Barber, 26, and Cornelius Paige, 31, all of the Orlando area, entered innocent pleas at a brief hearing before Judge Charles E. Clawson Jr. in Faulkner County Circuit Court. Each man was charged with three counts of kidnapping, five counts of criminal attempt to commit capital murder, and single counts of aggravated robbery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm, second-degree unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle and theft of property. Each also is charged with one felony count of fleeing in a vehicle and one misdemeano­r count of fleeing on foot, Prosecutin­g Attorney Marcus Vaden of Conway said.
