Arkansas Razorbacks defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads and defensive line coach John Scott Jr. saw defensive line target Emmit Gooden on Monday, the first day that Hogs coaches took to the road for the spring evaluation period.

Gooden, 6- 4, 320 pounds, of Independence Community College in Kansas has approximately 15 scholarship offers, including Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi State, Missouri, Georgia, Missouri and Louisville.

Good en said he appreciated that Rhoads and Scott were the first coaches to see him during the evaluation period.

“Going into the season Arkansas was on my wish list, and Monday, the first day of evaluation period, they came by,” Gooden said. “They were the first school to come by to see me at practice.”

Gooden traded direct messages with Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema on Wednesday and said he plans to visit the Hogs for the spring game on April 29.

“He said the staff loves my film and wants me to be a part of the program,” Gooden said of Bielema.

Gooden said he respects Scott, who joined Bielema’s staff on Feb. 7 after spending two seasons with the New York Jets as a defensive quality control coach.

“Coach Scott coming from the league, he’s told me about my game,” Gooden said. “That was huge especially coming from Arkansas.”

Gooden was a 4- star prospect out of Haywood High School in Brownsville, Tenn., and committed to Mississippi State for the 2016 class, but had to make his way to junior college. His said the Bulldogs don’t have an inside track with him and he is “pretty open.”

One thing Gooden said he feels strongly about is spending time with kids and mentoring them.

“Growing up, I always looked up to a local athlete,” he said. “So once I got older, a lot of kids started coming up to me. I stopped going to day care when I was 13. I was like the oldest kid there, and I use to take care of the kids.”

Gooden said he makes it a habit of staying in touch with youth in his hometown.

“I try to tell them to stay in school and stay away from the streets, stay away from trouble and pick your friends,” Gooden said.

Gooden, from western Tennessee, said he is familiar with Hogs basketball guard Jaylen Barford, who’s from Jackson, Tenn.

“He told me Fayetteville is a great place and Arkansas is a good program and they’ll take care of you,” Gooden said. “It was good catching up with him and seeing his success translate from the Juco level.”

SW CHRISTIAN RECRUITS

Arkansas Razorbacks basketball Coach Mike Anderson and the staff hosted three seniors from Southwest Christian Academy in Little Rock for unofficial visits on Thursday.

Coach Charles Baker said he believes forward/ center Mladen Armus, guard/ forward Gabe Osabuohien and shooting guard Avery Benson are under recruited.

“Time is the ultimate t r ut h te l l - er, time will show that all three of these kids can play effectively at a high level,” Baker said. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that.”

Southwest Christian defeated Mount Mission of Virginia 54- 44 to win the National Association of Christian Athletes national championship on Feb. 24. The team also featured Oral Roberts signee Emir Ahmedic and several other talented prospects, including junior point guard Shakur Daniel, who’s being recruited by Arkansas, Arizona State, LSU and several others.

Armus, 6- 10, 215, of Belgrade, Serbia, is drawing interest from Arkansas, Iowa State, South Florida, East Tennessee. State, Memphis and St. Bonaventure.

“He can carve out space in the low post and has moves like Kevin McHale in the low post and can score,” Baker said. “He rebounds as well as any kid in the country for his size, but here’s what they don’t know: He’s played his whole life as a faceup 4 and I played him on the low block because he was so unstoppable.”

Osabuohien, 6- 8, 219 pounds, of Toronto has scholarship offers from Murray State, East Tennessee. State and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock while drawing interest from Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa State, TennesseeMartin and others.

“Gabe can literally play on offense and defense at four different positions,” Baker said. “You could put Gabe at the 4 and run your offense through him. He can handle the ball like a guard and he can pass it like a guard. He has a 7- 1 wingspan. By the time he’s a sophomore in college, people will say where in the hell did he come from.”

Benson, 6- 4, 175, of Springdale, has interest from Arkansas, Iowa State, South Florida, Texas Tech and LouisianaMonroe. Benson is a sharp shooter with an allaround game.

“He can make shots and he can get out on transition,” Baker said. “He’s the ultimate team guy. Any team he’s on, the coach is going to be happy like him.”
