Seniors spur Nashville

The Nashville Scrappers have carved an impressive legacy this decade, but the current group of seniors had not earned a shot at adding to it. Until now. With a 10- 0 victory in five innings over Stuttgart in the Class 4A state softball tournament, the seniors will get their chance.

The Nashville Scrappers have carved an impressive legacy this decade, but the current group of seniors had not earned a shot at adding to it. Until now. With a 10- 0 victory in five innings over Stuttgart in the Class 4A state softball tournament Monday, these seniors will get their chance.

Nashville will face Pottsville in the state championship game Friday at Bogle Park in Fayetteville. Pottsville defeated Gravette 4- 0 in the other Class 4A semifinal.

The Scrappers won the title in 2010, 2012 and 2013.

“This is the first time this group of seniors has been to Bogle, and they have been talking about it since they were freshmen,’’ Coach Chad Hutson said. “While their dream has not been achieved, one goal has by reaching that.”

The Scrappers scored five times in the first inning and five times in the fourth.

Brookelyen Cox, Alyssa Harrison and Hannah White had RBI hits as the Scrappers took advantage of two Stuttgart errors in the first inning.

In the fourth, Cox added a three- run double. Kaylea Carver and Jules Futrell also had run- scoring singles.

“They came out today and gave us everything that they had, the best that they had,’’ Hutson said. “Today we were fortunate that it was good enough for us to continue to play.

“The one thing I have been encouraged about all year is the fact that we play great defense. Now we have struggled in a couple of games here late, but that has not been the norm. We think that is the true strength of our team.”

POTTSVILLE 4, GRAVETTE 0

The Apaches scored the only run they needed in the first when Abbie Cain reached on a walk, stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball.

It stayed 1- 0 until the sixth when the Apaches scored three more.

Aspen Campbell, the winning pitcher, had an RBI double. Kira Harrell and Skylar Campbell also had run- scoring singles.

“We were productive, and their pitcher is really good, and we just knew we had to get some runners on, move them around and put the ball in play to give us a chance,’’ Pottsville Coach Greg Jones said.
