Travs’ 2-run 8th nips Drillers

Ian Miller’s two-out double in the eighth inning brought home Nelson Ward and Joey Wong with the tying and go-ahead runs in the Arkansas Travelers’ 5-4 victory over the Tulsa Drillers on Monday afternoon at ONEOK Field in Tulsa.

Trailing 4-3 with one out, Keury De La Cruz and Wong singled to right field. Nelson Ward reached on a fielder’s choice in which De La Cruz, who was in a rundown between home and third base, was thrown out at the plate, allowing Ward to move to second and Wong to advance to third. Miller followed with a double down the right-field line to break the tie.

The Travelers led 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when Tulsa tied the game on a two-run home run by Paul Hoenecke. Tulsa took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on a home run by Jose Fernandez.

Kyle Waldrop’s sacrifice fly scored Gianfranco Wawoe in the top of the first to give Arkansas a 1-0 lead.

Tulsa tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first when Kyle Farmer singled in Kyle Garlick.

The Travelers took a 2-1 lead in the second when Wong singled in Kyle Petty. In the fifth inning, Wawoe doubled in Ian Miller, who led off the inning with a double to

make it 3-1.

Wong led the Travelers by going 4 for 4. Miller, Wawoe and Chuck Taylor had two hits. Thyago Viera (2-1) pitched 2 1 /3 scoreless innings in relief of Justin DeFratus to pick up the victory. Zac Curtis pitched a scorless ninth to get his fourth save of the season.

Garlick led the Drillers by going 3 for 5 and scoring one run. Tim Locastro and Hoenecke both had two hits.
