100 YEARS AGO June 21, 1917

Ten men who failed to register on June 5 have been arrested by deputies from the United States marshal’s office and a long list of names is now in the hands of the officers. Several of the men who have been arrested are in jail and the remainder are out on bond. The punishment for failure to register is one year in the penitentia­ry, but John A. Sherrill Jr., chief deputy, said last night that those who have failed to register June 5 may do so immediatel­y with the county or city clerk where they live and escape punishment, otherwise they will be arrested.

50 YEARS AGO June 21, 1967

HELENA — John Campbell, a Negro who formerly lived here, rescued a white couple from a Negro mob during riots at Tampa, Fla., last week, according to word received here. Mrs. Walter Carter of Tampa, a former Helena resident and a neighbor of the couple, sent a clipping from the Tampa Tribune which described Campbell’s heroism. The article follows: Tampa’s riots had at least one hero. John Campbell quietly told his story to The Tribune Monday night from his hospital bed at Tampa General Hospital. Campbell was the man in the crowd who prevented further harm to Carl and Joyce DeWitt, the Tampans so badly beaten by the mob late Sunday night.

FORT SMITH — Fort Smith residents concerned about good health care must boycott Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith because of its abortion policies, Dale Morfey, chairman of the Westark Christian Action Council, said Saturday. Also, Morfey said, likely Democratic presidenti­al nominee Gov. Bill Clinton, “if he has any sense at all … will recognize that Dr. Joyce Elders (director of the state Department of Health) is a negative influence on the reputation of the state of Arkansas.”

Returning to her quiet apartment complex at 619 Brookside Drive on Wednesday afternoon, Patti Phillips found a man lying in front of her door, bleeding from his upper body. In the open doorway of an upstairs apartment lay another man, a bullet hole in his side. According to Little Rock police, the two men had been shot at about 2:15 p.m. in a flurry of shots, the victims of an unidentifi­ed assailant.
