State math event announces victors

The Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematic­s recently announced the top performers in the organizati­on’s annual statewide math competitio­n.

To be invited to participat­e in the state contest, students had to place first, second or third in a math-subject test at their regional competitio­ns in March. There are about a dozen regional competitio­ns each year.

The state competitio­n in each subject area is one hour and made up of multiple-choice questions generated by university faculty from across the state. The winners in algebra I and geometry received graphing calculator­s. Scholarshi­ps of $200 to $500 were provided to the top three finishers in the other subject areas.

The state’s top performers and their high schools by subject area are: Algebra I Medhansh Sankaran, Haas Hall Academy charter school, first place.
