CHICAGO — Willie Reverand III, 67, of Chicago, Ill., died on June 25. He is survived by daughter Naisha Carroll, Las Vega, Nev.; four brothers, Bobby (Ahmad Rhamaan (Jewelina) Sims, Jewel (Lovette) Reverand, Marvin (Pat) Reverand; seven sisters, Debra (Howard) Nathaniel, Patricia Reverand, Joyce Reverand, Jacqueline (Casey) Jones, Courtney Sanders, Chyrel (Kenneth) Henry and Anita (Undre) Lambert; four grandchild­ren; loved ones Kevin Carroll, Maliyo Sanders, Jeremiah Weston and Ariam Carroll. Services are Saturday, July 8th, 2 p.m., at McGehee Chapel in McGehee, Ark. Services entrusted to Gunn Funeral Home, 4323 W. 29th, Little Rock, Ark. 501-660-4323.

–––––❖––––– PINEHURST, N.C. — Dorothy Jean Marlar, 91, of Pinehurst, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2017, at Quail Haven Retirement Village in Pinehurst, N.C.

Born in Harviell, Missouri, on December 31, 1925, Dorothy was the daughter of Henry Benjamin Johnson and Faye Blagg Johnson. She is survived by her son, Gary J. Marlar and his wife Claire of Pinehurst; a brother, John P. Johnson of Roseville, Mich.; six grandchild­ren; and nine great-grandchild­ren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry E. Marlar; a son, Phillip H. Marlar; a brother, Leonard B. Johnson; and a sister, Kathryn E. Coons.

She moved to Pinehurst in 2007 from her home in England, Ark., to be near her son’s family. In England she was active in the First Methodist Church for over 50 years and retired from Arkansas Power and Light Company in 1985 after a 25-year career.

The family wishes to thank the staff of the Quail Haven Inn for their kind and caring attention to Mrs. Marlar’s needs in the final months of her life.

A memorial service and interment will be at Mulberry Cemetery, England, Ark., at 11 a.m. on July 8, 2017. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation at Alz.org or to a charity of your choice.

–––––❖––––– FORT WORTH — Virginia Lee Gaines Hutchinson, 84, of Fort Worth, Texas, passed away on July 4, 2017, at Fort Worth. She was born on January 16, 1933, in Camden. She was referred to lovingly by family and friends as “Jenny.” Her parents were Lynn Nathaniel Gaines and Sarah Mullens Gaines. She taught Home Economics and Vocational Training at Castleberr­y High School, Fort Worth, Texas, until retirement.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Thomas Wilson Hearne and her brother, Lynn Nathaniel Gaines Jr. She is survived by her husband, John Hutchinson of Fort Worth; two sisters, Betty Emily Gaines and Becky Gaines Sexton of Camden; sister-in-law Elizabeth Baresch Gaines of Pine Bluff; and four nephews.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 10, at Greenwood Cemetery in Camden. Williams Funeral Home of Camden is in charge of arrangemen­ts.

–––––❖––––– MINERAL, Va. — Douglas E. Hawkins, 85, of Washington D.C./ Virginia passed away on May 4, 2017. Growing up in the Mountain Home, Arkansas, area, he graduated from high school there in 1950. He attended, and graduated from, the University of Arkansas, with a degree in Agricultur­e Engineerin­g, and joined the USDA Soil Conservati­on Service (SCS) in 1954.

Doug entered on military leave from SCS, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, graduated, and received his commission in July 1955. Doug was accepted into flight school in Pensacola, Florida. He completed fixed wing aircraft and advanced helicopter training, received his wings, and graduated in March 1957. From there, Doug was assigned to the Marine Corps Air Facility, New River, North Carolina. serving out his active duty tenure as a helicopter pilot.

After his Marine Corps Service, he returned to the SCS in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and the Little Rock State Office in the Watershed Planning capacity. He moved to Gainesvill­e, Florida, to serve as State Engineer. Doug then took a 2-year assignment with the EPA in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1980, Doug became the Assistant State Conservati­onist for Water Resources in Raleigh, North Carolina. Following that assignment, Doug moved to the National Headquarte­rs, Washington D.C. as Watershed Specialist in the Watershed Project and Maintenanc­e Division. In July 1986, he was selected as the State Conservati­onist for the State of Delaware. He returned to the National Headquarte­rs in January 1989 to the Engineerin­g Division as Assistant Director for Engineerin­g Technology. Doug retired in December 1990.

Doug is survived by his wife, Joan Small Hawkins, daughter, Kelly, son-in-law Nathan Carnes, grandchild­ren, Jason and Haley, his brother, Dwain Hawkins and sister, LaRue Wyatt, nieces and nephews.

Doug was buried on May 10, near his home in Arkansas with full military honors.
