100 YEARS AGO July 30, 1917

PARKDALE — Three persons were killed and two probably were fatally injured here today when an automobile driven by Miss Daisy Caldwell was struck at a railroad crossing by Iron Mountain passenger train No. 105 at 2:45. Mrs. Lem Caldwell and Oliver Caldwell were instantly killed, the woman’s body being frightfull­y mangled. Miss Lola Lawrence died in a few hours after the accident occurred. Physicians have little hope that Miss Daisy Caldwell and Lawrence Wolf will live.

July 30, 1967 Potters and ceramicist­s have a spiritual mystique all their own, apparently grounded in the Mother Earth materials with which they deal and the method of hands-and-feet manufactur­e they must use. The best work being done in the pottery and ceramics field went on display Saturday at the Arkansas Arts Center. Two Arts Center students, Miss Victoria Harvey and Roger Vandiver, are demonstrat­ing pot-throwing and slab or coil constructi­on. In addition, an electrifie­d potter’s wheel is available, along with clay and an apron, for anybody who walks in off the street with an urge to try their hand at it.

CONWAY — A son of executed murderer Rickey Ray Rector was sentenced to five years in prison Wednesday for shooting a man in the face. Keith Beatty, 17, of Conway received the sentence and a $1,000 fine from Circuit-Chancery Judge Watson Villines of Conway after pleading guilty Wednesday to first-degree battery. He was arraigned on the battery charge Jan. 24, the same day his father was executed for the 1981 murder of Conway police officer Bob Martin. Beatty was 16 at the time of the shooting in which he was charged.

Four members of a rival biker gang were stabbed in a melee Sunday afternoon with a group of Hell’s Angels outside a closed antique shop in Eureka Springs, police said. Six members of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle club were being held for questionin­g, said Carroll County Sheriff Robert Grudek. Their names were not released. The four bikers who were stabbed, all affiliated with the Bandidos motorcycle club, were airlifted with serious injuries to regional hospitals. Local police did not release their identities or their conditions Sunday evening.
