––––– ––––– CAROLYN S. FANT died at her home on Aug. 10, 2017, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. She was born in Searcy, Ark., on March 15, 1942 to Melvin R. and Virginia L. Pairett. In 1960, she graduated, with honors, from North Little Rock High School.

In 1966, Carolyn began the course work and training required to become a certified stenographic court reporter. In less than one year, she mastered stenography, passed the certification exam, and began her career as a freelance court reporter in Little Rock.

In 1972, Chief United States District Judge G. Thomas Eisele hired Carolyn as his court reporter, a position she served in, with great distinction, for the next twenty-six years. Judge Eisele was a brilliant trial judge, with a keen legal mind that allowed him to sometimes gust up to 300 words per minute of complex legal theories, liberally sprinkled with Latin phrases. While this would have been daunting to most court reporters, Carolyn loved everything about working for Judge Eisele. She was not shy about admonishing fast-talking lawyers to “slow down,” but she never made that suggestion a single time to Judge Eisele, who relished the privilege of being the only one in the courtroom allowed to talk as fast as he wanted.

In 1998, when Judge Eisele began considering retirement (something he ultimately decided to postpone for another 13 years), Carolyn became the court reporter for United States District Judge James M. Moody, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Carolyn greatly admired Judge Moody and loved the nine years she spent working with him. She often commented on what a special privilege it was to have served as the court reporter for two of the greatest trial judges in the history of Arkansas.

Apart from her unsurpassed abilities as a court reporter, Carolyn always made sure that chambers staff members were well fed. Nearly every day, Carolyn baked cookies, made a cake, or picked up goodies and brought them to the courthouse. Over her long career, Carolyn helped save over fifty law clerks from the ravages of discussing weighty legal issues with Judge Eisele or Judge Moody on an empty stomach. She delighted in watching solemn federal judges act like children, as they fought with their law clerks to see who got the last cookie or piece of cake.

Over her thirty-five year career in the federal courthouse, Carolyn brought sunshine into the lives of everyone she worked with, and, in doing so, she became a legend for her kindness, generosity, and capacity for love. All in all, “we will not look upon her like again.”

Once her day at the courthouse ended, Carolyn hurried home to resume what she considered her most important job – raising, as a single mom, her daughter, Dr. Jerri S. Fant. Carolyn’s steadfast devotion, encouragement, and unconditional love allowed Jerri to excel at everything she did, including becoming a board certified breast surgical oncologist.

After her retirement in 2007, Carolyn became “Nana” to her grandson, Griffen Thomas Fant. She happily cared for him most weekdays from 5:45 a.m. until the evening. She never entertained the thought that her battle with cancer would interfere with her caring for Griffen, something she continued to do until only six weeks ago.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jerri S. Fant, and grandson, Griffen Thomas Fant, both of Little Rock; sister Mary P. Banks (Tom) of Highlands, N.C.; mother Virginia L. Pairett, of North Little Rock; goddaughters Erin M. Ray of Little Rock and Kaitlin M. Ray of Los Angeles, Calif.; nieces Christy L. Banks (Tom) of Nashville, Tenn., and Jenny M. Rogers (Tom) of Kingsport, Tenn.; nephew Jeffrey T. Jinks (Heidi) of Tampa, Fla., and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin R. Pairett.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. A visitation will be held prior to the service in the welcome center at 10 a.m. (Entrance 1).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Research Institute at cancerreaserch.org.

The service arrangements have been entrusted to Ruebel Funeral Home. www.ruebelfuneralhome.com.

––––– ––––– SUSAN GAYLE KING SKILLEN of Little Rock, Ark., departed this earth on Aug. 11, 2017 at home.

She was born to John Hays and Alma Wagoner King on Oct. 10, 1948 in Tahlequah, Okla. At six months of age, she and her family moved to Hayti, Mo.

After graduation from Hayti High School, Susan attended one year at the University of Missouri, graduating with her BES degree from Southeast Missouri State in Cape Girardeau, Mo. She taught sixth grade in Hayti, and Webster Grove, Mo., for three years, then embarked on a career in ladies’ fashion.

As her great-aunt, Grace Hays, was ready to retire, Grace asked Susan if she was interested in taking over management of Hays and King clothing store in Van Buren, Ark. In 1973, in partnership with cousin, Jim Buchanan, Susan began operating Hays and King as manager.

With the business up and running, Susan became involved in her community. She served as member and President of the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce and was member and President of the GFWC chapter, later serving as the 1988-1990 state president. She involved herself in PEO chapters in each city in which she lived and was a member of D.A.R.

In 1984, Governor Bill Clinton recognized Susan for her exceptional accomplishments with her involvement in the Arkansas Community Development Program. She also involved herself in the Fort Smith Leadership program, and was recognized for her efforts to establish the Crawford County Adult Learning Center in 1994.

In addition to other numerous awards and recognitions, Susan was chosen as the Van Buren Outstanding Citizen of the Year and received the Iverson Rigg Memorial award in 1996. She nurtured and guided many young women in the business world while setting a great example of how to properly operate a business and treat people with respect. Those young women are counted among some of Susan’s richest treasures.

Susan was a devout member of St. John United Methodist Church in Van Buren, where she served as Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and in different capacities on various church committees. She also served on the merger committee that founded Heritage United Methodist Church in Van Buren. Her faith was always an important part of her, and she lived out her faith daily.

After Susan married Richard H. Skillen on Oct. 15, 1993, she decided to close her clothing business and follow him to his home in Pine Bluff. Upon arrival she became director of the Clean and Beautiful chapter, and later took a position with the Alliance of Jefferson County as volunteer coordinator.

Following her husband’s retirement in 2000, Susan’s brothers invited her to join them in the family grocery business in Eastern Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. At that time, the move was made to Wynne. The constant theme in her life was people, so her job with Hays Supermarkets as human resource manager was a perfect fit.

While living in Wynne, Susan’s faith naturally dictated she become involved in the Wynne First United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday school leader, and in different capacities on various church committees.

In April 2015, Susan decided to retire and move to Little Rock to be closer to her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John Hays and Alma Wagoner King.

Susan is survived by her husband, Richard H. Skillen; daughter, Kady S. (Alan) Hill; two wellloved grandchildren, Emerson and Whitaker Hill; brothers, David A. King, and his wife, Joyce, and Michael J. King, and his wife, Kay; nieces, Amy Louise (David) Gullic, Susannah H. King, Joy S. (Dan) Crunk, and Jan S. (Lee) Workman; nephews, Jon D. (Ashley), Michael J. (Jessica) King, Jeff (Sara), and Joe (Anna-Karin) Skillen; 16 great-nieces and great-nephews; and four great-great nieces.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Jamie Pennington and Dr. Monica Lo for their care and concern, the many friends who are like family who loved and supported Susan, Arkansas Heart Hospital, and Hospice Home Care of Little Rock.

A memorial service will be held at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Ark., 72211, (501) 224-8300 on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 6- 7:30 P.M. ––––– ––––– GRADY — Brother Raymond Henry Reed, beloved pastor of Grady First Baptist Church of Grady, Ark., died Aug. 10, 2017, at the age of 90 years. Brother Raymond retired in August

2016 for health reasons after serving Grady Baptist Church for 26 years, completing 68 years of ministry.

Raymond was born in Sonora, Ark., on Jan. 26, 1927, to Fred and Lula Reed who preceded him in death. He graduated from Huntsville High School in 1944, and he

enlisted in the Navy that same year. He served on the USS President Jackson in the South Pacific during WWII and was discharged in 1946. Raymond entered Ouachita Baptist College in 1947 where he met Norene Elizabeth Allen. They were married June 23, 1948. Richard was born October 1949, and twins Eddie and Alyce were adopted on Valentine’s Day, 1959. Carolyn McMurray entered the family through marriage September 1970. Raymond graduated from the University of Arkansas and Southwestern Baptist Seminary.

Raymond served as pastor in Arkansas, Texas and Washington states. He served as Director of Missions in Texas and Arkansas. Raymond and Norene’s ministry not only involved the church but the community where the church was. The heart of his ministry was “in touching people’s lives where they are today and where they will spend eternity.” They spent some 15 years serving the migrant population and developing a mission center in Bradley County. Ray and Norene were proud to have a dozen or more Hispanic kids call them grandma and grandpa because of the work at the mission center and in Grady. Raymond was blessed with numerous wonderful friends and working partners dealing with community needs. For a number of years Raymond was a key organizer in the annual Grady Lions Club Fish Fry. In time his grandson, John Reed, picked up where his grandfather left off. Over the years Raymond was honored with being the 1975 Citizen of the Year for Bradley County Chamber of Commerce. In 1978, he was honored by Ouachita Baptist University as Director of Missions of the year for Arkansas. He was also honored as Man of the year by Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce while serving as pastor at Grady.

Raymond was preceded in death by Norene, his wife of 58 years in 2006, son Eddie Reed, daughter Alyce Abney, grandson Jason Abney and daughter Teri Anthony. Raymond is also preceded in death by brothers, Neil, Jack, John, Bob, and Jim, and sisters Iris and Freida. He is survived by his wife Sue Anthony Reed, son Richard Reed (Linda), daughter-in-law Carolyn McMurray (Elbert), son-in-law, Jim Abney, son, Ronald Anthony, daughter Becky Peebles (Larry), sister Rachel Hepler (Fred), brother Fred Reed Jr. (Barbara) grandchildren: John Reed (Megan), Christy Ford (David), Kate Woodbury (Alex) and Erin Denman (Will), Christian Anthony, Matthew Anthony and James Peebles. Great-grandchildren: Kelsey Ford, Maddy Ford, Kyle Williams, Jesse Williams and Jaycen Woodbury.

The Raymond Reed family celebrates the lives of his siblings/ spouses and all of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Raymond’s brothers and sisters all were service-oriented through ministry, military, nursing, teaching and business.

Raymond was very special to a number of people that he “adopted” into the family through his lifelong ministries. They each blessed the other through friendship, partnership and a common belief in service to God. As Raymond’s health began to fail, he was resolute when he said, “it’s in God’s hand’s now”. Now, he truly is in God’s hands. To God be Glory.
