BETTYE ANN BALIOS, 92, passed away August 15, 2017. Formerly Bettye Ann Flemister, she was born May 13, 1925 in Dalton, Georgia, the daughter of Linton Hamilton Flemister, Sr. and Mary Lee Combee Flemister.

She is survived by the love of her life, Harold George Balios. Bettye and Harold had recently celebrated their

75th wedding anniversary. Other survivors include daughters, Dr. Vickie Balios Logan of Little Rock and Becky Ann Thorne of North Little Rock, and sons-in-law, Frank Thorne and Dave Volsen. She had four grandchildren, Kody and Kash Logan and Tracy and Bradley Thorne, and nine great-grandchildren, counting Baby Thorne due in March, 2018.

Bettye worked briefly at M.M. Cohn Co., but moved to Houston with Harold during WWII. After they moved back to Little Rock, she became known for her artistic abilities. She did sketches and painted portraits. Bettye maintained year-round gardens and constructed beautiful floral arrangements. Her theme-party planning was enjoyed by all who knew her. Perhaps her greatest talent was costume design. She designed and made hundreds of specialty costumes, two of which won national costume awards: an elaborate antebellum gown and one depicting Arkansas as the duck hunting capital of the world.

Bettye was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She had a deep faith in God and this was reflected in her strong prayer life. She will be greatly missed by those left behind, but others she loved are rejoicing in heaven to be with her again.

A celebration of her life will be led by Rev. Mary Hilliard on Saturday, August 19 at 10 a.m. at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Ct. (NW corner I-630 and Barrow Rd.). A private burial will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements by Little Rock Funeral Home, (501) 2242200. Bettye’s online guestbook may be signed at www.littlerockfuneralhome.com.

–––––❖––––– BERTA ANN BOHN BLAGG, 74, of Maumelle passed away on Tuesday, August 15, 2017. She was born in Little Rock on November 7, 1942 to Wanda Kerr Bohn and Herman G. Bohn who both predecease her along with a brother, T.O. Hagar and her Aunt Rochelle Stephens.

She is survived by her best friend and husband of 54 years, Chancy Blagg of Maumelle; two daughters, Cristi Angela of Atkins and Candi Langmaid of Little Rock. She also leaves the three loves of her life; grandson Chance Blagg of Maumelle, granddaughter Lauren Langmaid of Maumelle, and grandson Lyndon Langmaid of Little Rock. Other survivors are her sister, Sharon Meadows of Greers Ferry, Ark.; her brother, David Bohn and wife Kathy of Marion, Ohio; uncle, C.H. Kerr and wife Carol of Hensley, Ark.; along with nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins, all of which she made every effort to stay in contact with over the years.

Berta was self-employed as an accountant and tax preparer taking over for her mother, Wanda Kerr’s business when she passed away in 1991. Between Berta and her mother, they had clients dating back as far as 1964 who had become dear friends as well.

In 1978 Berta joined the Little Rock Chapter of the Sweet Adelines, later renamed the Top of the Rock chorus. She sang baritone with the chorus for 25 years. She said it was the best thing that she had ever done. Being a member of this organization built a sense of pride and accomplishment. Performing, traveling and building new friendships all through the love of singing. Her quartet, More Than Friends was what the true sisterhood of this organization is about.

Sometimes friends become family… and she leaves very special friends, they all know who they are. Berta loved life, her family and her extended “adopted” family including several “sons” and “daughters” who affectionately called her “Momma.” She will be greatly missed and loved forever.

A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 at Roller Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Ark. 72211. Visitation will be one hour before the service, starting at 2 p.m. Online guestbook: www.rollerfuneralhomes.com/chenal.

–––––❖––––– KEVIN FRANCIS DERDEN, 51, of Little Rock peacefully passed into eternal life on August 10, 2017. Kevin was born on January 9, 1966, the second child of Francis and Marie Derden. Kevin was born and proud to have been raised in Sherrill, Arkansas.

Growing up in a rural community, he and his beloved sister, Kim, spent most of their time outdoors. Kevin developed a love for riding dirt bikes that evolved into a lifelong hobby and passion for Harley Davidsons.

After proudly graduating high school from England Academy in 1984, Kevin attended college at the University of Central Arkansas. Kevin found his niche at UCA as a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity. As a member of the fraternity, Kevin not only cultivated life-long friendships, but also his natural talent for hospitality.

Kevin met his love and match, Janie Prislovsky, in the late 1980’s. The pair was married in 1992 in her hometown of Stuttgart and made their home in Little Rock. The couple enjoyed countless adventures over their 25 years of marriage, the greatest of which beginning in September of 1994 with the birth of their daughter, Madison. Kevin’s passion for fatherhood was nothing short of radiant, and his love for his daughter was unconditional.

Kevin’s compassion was not only reflected through his role as a husband and father, but also as a businessman. Kevin opened KD Sales in Sherrill, AR in 1988. Kevin’s gift for facilitating friendships and natural inclusive attitude has since grown the earth moving equipment manufacturer into an international operation. Though proud to have been connected across the world, Kevin was more proud to have kept the business based at home in Sherrill.

Above all, Kevin was an incredible family man and a fierce friend. Kevin’s generosity was a marvel to be admired, and his love was constantly outpouring. The ultimate host, Kevin enjoyed nothing more than cooking for a house-full of Madison’s friends or preparing food for the masses at the next Razorback tailgate. He treated all of his friends like family and strangers like lifelong friends. His genuine love and fervor for life will be missed every day by so many.

Kevin was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Derden and Mr. and Mrs. Grover Gibbs and by his father-in-law, James Prislovsky Sr. He is survived by his wife, Janie Prislovsky Derden; daughter, Madison Derden; extra daughter, Joanna Fureigh; parents, Francis “Sonny” and Marie Derden; sister, Kimberly Derden Cole; beloved nieces, Mackenzie and Marley Cole; special cousin, Karen “Chickie” Prislovsky; motherin-law, Floy Prislovsky, as well as, host of extended family and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 18th from 6-8 p.m. at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, 13801 Chenal Parkway, Little Rock, Arkansas and a Memorial Service will be held Saturday, August 19th at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Hillcrest and Kavanaugh.

–––––❖––––– CAROLYN S. FANT died at her home on August 10th, 2017, after a courageous three year battle with cancer. She was born in Searcy, Arkansas on March 15, 1942 to Melvin R. and Virginia L. Pairett. In 1960, she graduated, with honors, from

North Little Rock High School.

In 1966, Carolyn began the course work and training required to become a certified stenographic court reporter. In less than one year, she mastered stenography, passed the certification exam, and began her career as a freelance court reporter in Little Rock.

In 1972, Chief United States District Judge G. Thomas Eisele hired Carolyn as his court reporter, a position she served in, with great distinction, for the next 26 years. Judge Eisele was a brilliant trial judge, with a keen legal mind that allowed him to sometimes gust up to 300 words per minute of complex legal theories, liberally sprinkled with latin phrases. While this would have been daunting to most court reporters, Carolyn loved everything about working for Judge Eisele. She was not shy about admonishing fast-talking lawyers to “slow down,” but she never made that suggestion a single time to Judge Eisele, who relished the privilege of being the only one in the courtroom allowed to talk as fast as he wanted.

In 1998, when Judge Eisele began considering retirement (something he ultimately decided to postpone for another 13 years), Carolyn became the court reporter for United States District Judge James M. Moody, a position she held until her retirement in 2007. Carolyn greatly admired Judge Moody and loved the nine years she spent working with him. She often commented on what a special privilege it was to have served as the court reporter for two of the greatest trial judges in the history of Arkansas.

Apart from her unsurpassed abilities as a court reporter, Carolyn always made sure that chambers staff members were well fed. Nearly every day, Carolyn baked cookies, made a cake, or picked up goodies and brought them to the courthouse. Over her long career, Carolyn helped save over 50 law clerks from the ravages of discussing weighty legal issues with Judge Eisele or Judge Moody on an empty stomach. She delighted in watching solemn federal judges act like children, as they fought with their law clerks to see who got the last cookie or piece of cake.

Over her 35 year career in the federal courthouse, Carolyn brought sunshine into the lives of everyone she worked with, and, in doing so, she became a legend for her kindness, generosity, and capacity for love. All in all, “we will not look upon her like again.”

Once her day at the courthouse ended, Carolyn hurried home to resume what she considered her most important job – raising, as a single mom, her daughter, Dr. Jerri S. Fant. Carolyn’s steadfast devotion, encouragement, and unconditional love allowed Jerri to excel at everything she did, including becoming a board certified breast surgical oncologist.

After her retirement in 2007, Carolyn became “Nana” to her grandson, Griffen Thomas Fant. She happily cared for him most weekdays from 5:45 a.m. until the evening. She never entertained the thought that her battle with cancer would interfere with her caring for Griffen, something she continued to do until only six weeks ago.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Dr. Jerri S. Fant, and grandson, Griffen Thomas Fant, both of Little Rock; sister Mary P. Banks (Tom) of Highlands, N.C.; mother Virginia L. Pairett, of North Little Rock; goddaughters, Erin M. Ray of Little Rock and Kaitlin M. Ray of Los Angeles, Calif.; nieces, Christy L. Banks (Tom) of Nashville, Tenn. and Jenny M. Rogers (Tom) of Kingsport, Tenn.; nephew, Jeffrey T. Jinks (Heidi) of Tampa, Fla., and numerous great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin R. Pairett.

A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at St. James United Methodist Church, 321 Pleasant Valley Drive, on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. A visitation will be held prior to the service in the welcome center at 10 a.m. (Entrance 1).

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cancer Research Institute at cancerreaserch.org. The service arrangements have been entrusted to Ruebel Funeral Home. www. ruebelfuneralhome.com.
