The Road Runners Club of America’s 20-race Arkansas Grand Prix Series returns at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

The ARK 5K Classic has been through name and route changes since it joined the series in 1983, but Arkansas Running Klub has always held it Labor Day weekend. This year’s race starts at Crystal Hill Elementary School, 5001 Northshore Drive in North Little Rock.

The course is flat and fast on the roads and paved trails.

Online registration is open at runsignup.com (search for “ARK 5K Classic”) until midnight Friday for $20. Race-day packet pickup and registration begin at 6:30 a.m.

Stone Skipping Championships

The second annual Great Southern Stone Skipping Championships in Shirley on Saturday provide an opportunity to show off the stone chucking arm dangling at your side.

After the Pledge of Allegiance at 9 a.m., the event begins with a quick skills clinic and warmup throws into Greers Ferry Lake at Fairfield Bay Marina, 4350 S. Arkansas 330.

Registration is $10 per person, with two categories: 13 and older, and children 12 and under.

Rocks will be lying around, but hopeful skippers are advised to supply their own. There’s only one rule: no manmade stones.

Skipping will commence for real at 9:30 with five judges counting as each competitor makes three throws. The top five adults and children will compete in skip-offs at 10:15. Winners will be selected by number of skips, not distance.

The top three from the skip-offs in both categories will win prize money.
