ibraries are a wonderful resource for communities. From books and DVDs to reading programs and music, there is much to be found at these facilities. There are a few steps to take to make sure you get the most out of your local library.

“Libraries offer valuable resources to the community for free, whether it is someone using the computer lab to find a job, checking out books for a class project or taking home movies to entertain the family,” said Kari Beesley, marketing coordinator for the Saline County Library, which has branches in Benton and Bryant.

The first task is simply to get a library card. Visit the library’s website or visit in person to find out what the requirements are to obtain a card, which will vary depending on the library. For example, at the Saline County Library, one needs photo identification and proof of Saline County residency, which can be a driver’s license or a utility bill. Bring those to the “Ask Here” desk at the Benton branch or to the front counter at the Bryant branch, and the staff will walk the applicant through the stepby-step process to get a card.

While most people think of books when they think of libraries, modern libraries offer many more services. Patrons can get access to audio books, e-books, videos, DVDs and Blu Ray movies, computers and much more. Some libraries even offer fishing gear and cake pans.

“Both branches of the Saline County Library offer a variety of services, such as a computer lab, free Wi-Fi, laptops for in-library use, online databases, passport-application assistance, a public notary, information-technology support, Book-A-Librarian and other entertaining and informational programs throughout the year,” she said.

Many libraries also hold events and regular programs. From reading groups to guest musicians, these programs help enrich the lives of the community’s citizens. Check the library’s website or Facebook page for upcoming events. Reading groups are available for all ages, and some are specific to a type of literature.

“For teens, popular programs include an anime and art club,” she said. “Role-playing games have also been a huge hit lately.”

One of the most important resources at the library are the librarians themselves. They have years of experience and can help find resources, whether it’s locating a physical book or helping to put together a reading list. While libraries have great staffs, help is always needed. Volunteering is a great way to gain community-service hours that look great on any college resume, she said. Volunteer space at Saline County’s two libraries is limited and fills quickly, she said.
