100 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1917 HEBER SPRINGS — The case against Simon Conditt and Mrs. Mattie Isbell, charged with the killing of the latter’s husband, L. F. Isbell, was nolle prossed [dismissed] in Circuit Court here yesterday. Conditt was with Isbell when he was assaulted by two unknown men in the early part of last December. He died a few days later from injuries received on the night of the assault. Frank Colbouth and Levi Beauchamp were arrested in connection with the killing, but the former was released at the examining trial.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1967

The State Police Commission said Friday that the Department needed $560,000 in State Police funds that currently is in the general revenue fund, but that it couldn’t get the money because of a tieup in the state Administra­tion Department. Capt. Harold Bell told the Commission that he had attempted to get the money transferre­d to the State Police account but had failed. He said the State Police Department was spending about $200,000 a month and that the money would be needed very soon.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1992

The Republican Party of Arkansas has every right to exclude the national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan from being the Republican nominee for state representa­tive, a judge ruled Thursday. “A party should be able to dictate who should represent their ranks,” Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza said. Thom Robb of near Zinc (Boone County) had sued the party and its officials Thursday for refusing to submit his name as the unopposed Republican candidate for the District 39 state House seat.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 2007

A 28-year-old Little Rock man who police say has confessed to killing a Forrest City man in April claims his roommate is the real killer, court files show. Joel Bradley appeared before Pulaski County Circuit Judge John Langston on Tuesday to announce his intentions to challenge the findings of doctors at the State Hospital that he is competent to stand trial on a first-degree murder charge. He is accused of killing 39-year-old Daryl Houston of Forrest City. Houston’s body was found a couple of blocks from Bradley’s apartment in an alley behind a home in the 3200 block of West 12th Street in Little Rock on April 3.
