JOE T. ROBINSON 49, FOUNTAIN LAKE 14

FOUNTAIN LAKE — Joe T. Robinson wasted no time proving its status as a Class 4A championship contender Friday night on Allen Tillery Field at Beckham Memorial Stadium.

After winning the opening coin toss and deferring its option until the second half, the Senators recovered an onside kick and the rout was on. Caezar Warren and Zaytron Waits each rushed for two touchdowns as Robinson breezed past Fountain Lake 49-14 in the 7-4A opener for both teams.

With Robinson leading 350, Tyler Jones broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of the second half. The Cobras got on the scoreboard on an 80-yard kickoff return by Parion Johnson, but Warren followed suit with a 68-yard return and the Senators led 49-7 after three quarters.

Taking over on the Robinson 23 after recovering a fumble, the Cobras set the final margin on a three-yard touchdown pass from Stephen Turner to Kyle Johler.

Warren gave the Senators a quick lead less than two minutes into the game, rumbling 39 yards on the third play from scrimmage. After a quick three-and-out possession by the Cobras, Waits capped a four play, 58-yard drive from one yard out.

Greyson Tackett connected with Noah Taylor for 37 yards and a touchdown while Waits and Warren each ran for a score in the second quarter to enact the mercy rule and continuous running clock in the second half.

The Cobras (2-2) travel to Nashville next week.
