McClellan overwhelms Fair

- MIKE SMITH

Little Rock McClellan Coach Maurice Moody said he didn’t think his team got much out of Friday night’s 56-6 victory over outmanned Little Rock Fair at Scott Field.

So, with Pulaski Academy, Little Rock Christian, Little Rock Parkview and Beebe coming up on McClellan’s 5A-West schedule, Moody had Lions running sprints before leaving the field after the game.

“We didn’t get a whole lot out of this,” he said. “We have to clean up the foolish penalties and that’s been going on the last three weeks.

“We have got to clean the game up. You can’t beat the upper echelon teams like that. … We got a murderer’s row coming.

“We’ve got the talent, we’ve got the team, we’ve got the pedigree, we’ve got the DNA. We’ve got to play good sound football.”

The game was over almost as soon as it started.

One play into the game, Andre Campbell ran 72 yards for a touchdown and the Crimson Lions and were in position for a second touchdown when Fair lost a fumble on its first offensive play, giving McClellan had a first down at the War Eagles 17.

McClellan got 5 yards closer after an offside penalty, and the Lions scored on Damion Martin’s 12-yard around the left side.

The Lions’ lead was 14-0 after less than one minute of play.

McClellan added three more first-quarter touchdowns to lead 35-0, but Moody did not blame Fair.

He had nothing but praise for Fair Coach Roosevelt Turner and his band of fewer than 30 inexperienced players.

“I’ve got to hand it to Coach Turner over there,” Moody said.

“He’s doing a fantastic job, doing the best he can.

“He’s got a lot of young guys over there and we’ve got a lot of seniors. They are seasoned and they’ve played in a lot of big games.”

The War Eagles, down 140, picked up two first downs on their next possession, but they took a step backward with a bad snap, then a delay-of-game penalty that put them in a 4th-and-38.

McClellan scored three touchdowns in short order to take a 35-0 lead before the end of the first quarter.
