Personal space

Where I live: Central High Historic Neighborhood

Occupation: Executive director of Compassion Works for All, a prison outreach organization that offers tools for healing for people who are incarcerated.

My favorite space is: The upstairs sleeping porch. It’s a second story porch with most of the original lattice intact. The porch spans the back of the house and overlooks the Central High Museum and National Park.

Why? I love spending my mornings drinking coffee on the porch with my partner, Kyle Leyenberger, and our dog, Frankie. We have a beautiful view of a national park that symbolizes courage of equanimity and the suffering that people endure when we ignore our common humanity and connections to each other. Our city is still struggling with racial injustice, especially in the school system, but I’m encouraged to see so many visitors to the museum. Sometimes I’m a little late for work, particularly now that the weather is getting cooler, but my morning porch time reflections provide me with a grounding to start my day.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Change my perception that anything needed to be changed! Kyle and I just finished restoring the house; we spent the last year and half making changes. I’m so grateful to have such a comfortable place to enjoy this urban naturescape.
