Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Breath of Life Gala raises $215,000
Cystic fibrosis patients may literally breathe easier thanks to nearly $215,000 raised during the 10th annual Breath of Life Gala benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-Arkansas Chapter.
Attracting more than 300 guests, the gala took place Oct. 7 in the Little Rock Marriott Grand Ballroom and kicked off with a cocktail reception and silent auction prior to dinner. Master of ceremonies Elicia Dover of KATV began the night’s program on a high note, speaking of advances in cystic fibrosis treatment since the first gala. The progress was also highlighted via video.
Honored with this year’s Breath of Life Award were philanthropic artist Pat Matthews, whose noted paintings of the American flag have helped garner funds for the foundation and others; and his wife and fellow artist, Tracee Gentry-Matthews. Gentry-Matthews thanked Janet and Dr. Glenn Davis for introducing her to the foundation years ago “and showing me how important it is to contribute to such an amazing cause.”
Matthews compared the process of creating a painting to efforts to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. “The secret to completing this work is what you are all doing tonight,” he told the audience. “Thank you for all you are doing — and keep painting.”
Other honorees for the evening were Mitchell Williams Law Firm, named Corporate Champion; Brittany Emery as the Claudia Fulton Outstanding Volunteer; Jerry Pavlas, event chairman, recipient of the Milestone Award; and social worker Mary Jo Chambers, named the Hero of Hope. Also recognized were all past Breath of Life honorees.
During the gala’s Mission Moment, “CF Fighter” Aven Emery — who is also the 11-year-old daughter of Brittany Emery — shared her story of living with cystic fibrosis. The night was rounded out with a live auction by Bill Hartnedy, a “bid for a cure” and live music by Cosmocean.
