Stage star, Mozart’s father in Amadeus

LONDON — Roy Dotrice, a veteran British actor, died at his London home Monday. He was 94.

Dotrice was known for his role as Leopold Mozart in the Oscar-winning film Amadeus and for his many theater and TV roles.

He won many accolades throughout his lengthy career, including a Tony Award in 2000 for his role in the Broadway revival of A Moon for the Misbegotte­n.

Dotrice is remembered for his role in the CBS TV series

Beauty and the Beast and won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ best TV actor award in 1969 for his role in Misleading Cases.

He gained many new fans later in his career as narrator for audiobook editions of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, which inspired the TV series Game of Thrones.

Before his acting career, Dotrice was a wireless operator and an air gunner with the Royal Air Force. He was imprisoned in German camps from 1942-45 after his plane was shot down.

Dotrice sometimes performed for other prisoners in shows designed to raise their spirits, and he took up acting full time after the conclusion of World War II.

His family said his three daughters, grandchild­ren and great grandson were with him when he died. His wife, Kay, died in 2007 after 60 years of marriage.
