ALTON A. BECK of Sherwood died Oct. 27, 2017. He was 98. Hazel Rogers Beck, his wife of 53 years, went before him in 2004. He is survived by his children: Ken (Wendy) of Lebanon, Tenn., Don

Al was born April 22, 1919, in Ben Lomond, Ark., the son of Ruben Lowrey Beck and Alta Mize Beck. Surviving siblings are Jason Beck of Panora, Iowa, Jo Ann Barnum of Ozark, Ark., and Evelyn Welch and R.L. Beck, both of Sheridan, Ark. Siblings William, Blanche, Raymond, Bobby, Lila, Marvin and Marie preceded him in death, as did his parents and three siblings who died during or a short time after birth.

Most of Al’s childhood was spent in Alleene, Ark., in Little River County. He graduated from Ashdown High School in 1937 before beginning a 25-year career as an Air Force meteorolog­ist, followed by 11 years with the Arkansas Highway Department.

Alton Allen Beck was a man who loved God, family, friends and country. He served as a deacon with the Sylvan Hills Church of Christ’s benevolenc­e ministry and was involved with the World Bible School program. With a servant’s heart he carried groceries and appliances to many in need in the North Little Rock area as well as studied the Bible with hundreds of souls, mostly Africans, who yearned for the gospel truth. During his last decade, he furnished the salaries and motorbikes for a dozen Nigerian preachers.

Dad’s life reflected the words of the prophet Micah: And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Hazel, the only woman he ever loved, in the Curlee Church of Christ Cemetery in Readyville, Tenn. 14, 1918 in Auvergne, Arkansas to David

Henry and Mineola Burton.

After receiving a degree in chemical engineerin­g from the University of Arkansas, he farmed near Tupelo, Ark., for 36 years as well as being involved in other agricultur­al businesses, including serving as president of Farmers Oil Corporatio­n. He served on the Board of Trustees of Harding University for 25 years, and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. He enjoyed traveling and being at his lake house, and he was an accomplish­ed woodworker.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Elaine Burton, second wife of 17 years, Ada Shuffield Burton, brother, Owen Burton, and sister, Opal Ford. ALEXANDER — Sammy (Sam) Barnes, 77, of Alexander, Arkansas, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, October

25, 2017 at his home. Sam was born June 23,

1940 in Moorefield, Arkansas to Gerald and

Ruth Barnes.

He graduated from Little Rock Tech in 1958. On March 4, 1961 he married the former Jean Hester. Sam was a former Benton Police Officer and Fleet Manager for Bale Chevrolet. He enjoyed working and never met a stranger. He spent countless hours in his workshop where he made numerous valuable pieces for his family to treasure. He also enjoyed fishing, coin collecting and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Ruth Barnes. Sam is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean (Hester) Barnes; son, Jerry Barnes (Alexander, Ark.); his daughter, Karen (Barnes) Smith and son-in-law, Joel Smith (Bryant, Ark.); three grandchild­ren, Sara Coker (Fayettevil­le, Ark.), Brandon Smith (Portland, Ore.) and Sydney Smith (Denver, Colo.); brotherin-law and sister-in-law, Edwin and Linda Hester.

Margaret was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was very devoted to her Catholic faith and had her rosary with her at all times. She was a loving, strong and most appreciati­ve mother. She always had a beautiful smile and she was a wonderful cook who loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchild­ren. She graduated from St. Vincent School of Nursing and enjoyed her nursing career prior to starting her family and cared for people throughout her life. She also worked side by side with her husband at Enderlin Nursery for many years.

She is survived by her husband Raymond “Dick” Enderlin of 61 years and children Ray (Margie) Enderlin of Russellvil­le, Ark., Carolyn Hambuchen and Michael (Jill) Enderlin of Conway, Ark.; Matthew (Amber) Enderlin of Little Rock Ark. and 13 grandchild­ren: Rachel, Jessica and Alex(Emily)Enderlin; Brittany (Blake) Williams, Josh (Bailey) and Zach Hambuchen; Blake and Landon Enderlin, Brooke (James) Luyet, Allison, Cole, Drake and Nick Enderlin. 2017 and was pursuing a degree in biblical studies at Crowley’s Ridge College. Blake was anyone’s and everyone’s friend at heart. He was always ready to share his incredible faith to make even the greatest doubter a believer. A true optimist and people person, his smile and jokes were always ready to brighten your day. He loved music, camping, and casseroles, especially with rice or noodles. A great day for him was taking it easy, hanging with friends and family. He left us all too soon on October 25, 2017.

Kattie Mae Connor Duke.

Sergeant Major Eugene Duke retired from the Army National Guard after 45 years of service. He joined the Guard as a Private First Class in Company C 875th Engineers. He was also a full-time military technician for the National Guard. He worked for 20 years as an organizati­onal mechanic in Stuttgart before transferri­ng to a position at Camp Robinson. His last assignment before retirement was as a maintenanc­e mechanic supervisor. While in the Guard, he earned the Meritoriou­s Service Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, Army Achievemen­t Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, Army Reserve Components Achievemen­t Medal with silver oak leaf cluster and two bronze oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and gold hourglass and bronze hourglass, NCO Profession­al Developmen­t Ribbon with 4” device, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal with bronze oak leaf cluster, Army National Guard Career Counselor Badge, and the Arkansas Service Rib- bon with silver diamond and two bronze diamonds.

Beno was an avid outdoorsma­n and woodworker. He enjoyed playing dominoes and working puzzles. But, he enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his friends at the Ulm Hunting club where he had been a member for 56 years. He was past President of the Kiwanis and was Constable two terms for the Gumwood community.

Beno was of the Baptist faith and was a charter member of Southside Baptist Church in Stuttgart. Beno was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles (Buddy) Duke and John Duke; two step-sons, Roger Hillis and Joey Hillis. He is survived by his wife, Sue Hillis Duke; son, Mark Duke (Myra) of Stuttgart; daughter, Frances Graham; step-daughter, Susan Pitts (Mike); step-son, Dennis Fox (Janet) all of England; 14 grandchild­ren and seven great-grandchild­ren; and one brother, Frank Duke (Marie) of Stuttgart.

–––––❖––––– McRAE — Lela Strange, 77, of McRae, Arkansas, was born August 27, 1940, at McRae to Ollie and Helen (McAfee) Strayhorn. She passed away Thursday, October 26, 2017. She served on the McRae City Council 18 years, was PTA president at McRae School for eight years and owned McRae Flower Shop for 20 years. She also coached girls’ softball. Lela was a fantastic mother of three daughters, and she worshiped her grandchild­ren. Lela was always helping people regardless of the circumstan­ce.

She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Strange of the home, Portia Pierce (Greg), and Jerrie Willbanks (Buster); grandson Kody Willbanks; great-grandchild­ren Tyler Newman and Brentlee Newman; brother Kenneth Strayhorn (Beth); aunt Catherine Stark and sister-in-law, Barbara (Strayhorn) Westbrook. Lela was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Gerral Strange; grandson Nick Newman; her parents; brothers Farriel, Bernice and Joe; and mother-in-law Helen Strange.
