New and old players key to success for Lady Bears

After a 2016-17 season that ended on an 8-21 record, the White County Central Lady Bears are ready to work hard and reach higher this year. Coach Tammy Parish said several players — both new players to the Lady Bears and returners — are going to be influential in the team’s success in the 2017-18 season. Two senior returners — Briley Evans and Courtlyn Jackson — both averaged 9 points per game last year. Both seniors are 5 feet 10 inches tall and have worked in the offseason to improve their games. “We are excited about our post duo seniors, Briley Evans and Courtlyn Jackson,” Parish said. “They have spent time during the summer working together developing their post game.” Junior Somer McSpadden is also an important returning player, Parish said, having averaged 7 points per game last season. McSpadden will be a key player in the outside game for the Lady Bears, possibly providing leadership with some of the younger players. “We’re looking for contribution from our two sophomores, Abigail Mullins and Maddie Wallage, and returning starter Somer McSpadden,” Parish said. Senior Kristen Shivers will be another influential player for the Lady Bears. “Kristen Shivers is a behind-the-scenes player that is versatile,” Parish said. “She can play inside and outside for us. We’re expecting good leadership from her.” One new player to the court is Ashton Huddy. “She is a junior who has a lot of natural athletic ability, and we are excited about her development,” Parish said. Another junior, Paiton Higgs, has been out of practice as a result of injuries, but Parish said he is looking forward to her return soon. “She started a few games for us last year,” the coach said. “She has the potential to do some good things for our program.”
