Bears aiming higher

- BY ANGELA SPENCER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Last year, the White County Central Bears ended the season 34-5. This year, coach Ryan Koerdt said there’s no reason his players can’t improve and go even further. “We made the state tournament for the first time in school history,” he said of the 2016-17 season. “These kids have the experience to go further this year.” With four solid returning starters — juniors Marlin Carder, Hunter Jackson and Jagger Myers; and senior Jonathan Rolett — along with the rest of the team, Koerdt said he is confident the Bears will have a successful season. Carder is one of the team’s best outside players who has improved a lot since last season, Koerdt said. Jackson and Rolett both “are athletic wings that can really get after it defensively,” the coach said, and Myers has great leadership on the team. Another key player this year will be senior Garret Finley, the coach said. “He is 6 feet 7 inches and has a multitude of moves,” Koerdt said. “He moved back to his home district after being at Riverview. He has worked hard on making his defense a strength. His offensive game is on an elite level.” Sophomore Ethan Jones had three huge games last year in the postseason as a freshman, Koerdt said, and he is ready to hit the court hard this year. Some strengths the Bears have this year are shooting, post play, guard play and depth. While they may struggle with team speed, Koerdt is confident they can both be an entertaining team and make it far in the tournament. “We have a great schedule, so all games will be games to watch,” he said.
