‘Outrageous service’ to kids lauded in LR insurance man

-

Little Rock insurance man Greg Hatcher is known for his book, 55 Steps to Outrageous Service. And it’s his “outrageous service” to his customers and his community that led to his being chosen to receive this year’s Arkansas Children’s Award. The 22nd annual award dinner, held Oct. 26 in the grand ballroom of the Little Rock Marriott, was a benefit for the Batesville-based Arkansas Sheriff’s Youth Ranches and drew county sheriffs from around the state.

Former governor — and former award winner — Mike Beebe continued a tradition of serving as master of ceremonies, approaching the job with his usual dry humor. Craig O’Neill led a live auction and encouraged onsite donations, which were scrolled on large screens.

An invocation by the Rev. Rex M. Horne and a rendition of “Amazing Grace” by a young, current rancher, identified only as Davon, got the program started. Board of trustees member Roger Wright shared his story as a former rancher at the facility, which provides a home for children who have been abused and neglected. Current rancher Ben Ortiz received a standing ovation after sharing his story that began with a difficult childhood, but took a positive turn thanks to the love he has received since arriving at the ranches.

Ron Boyeskie, vice president of CBM Construction, and Kelsey Hatcher Dacus, daughter of the honoree, gave tributes to Hatcher — the former referencing Hatcher’s philanthropic work and involvement with student athletes; the latter sharing a few favorite memories of Hatcher and his role in her athletic pursuits, and reading the inspirational poem “The Race.” Hatcher gave his own kudos and thank-yous and shared a bit of wisdom for the benefit of the young ranchers present.
