JACK FRANKLIN COTTON was born in Tupelo, Miss., on Feb. 10, 1944, and passed away Nov. 30,

2017. He was a man who never met a stranger, was the life of the party, and a friend to all.

You can trace his life by the nicknames he was dubbed by the people that loved him.

Growing up in Memphis, Tenn., he was called ‘Kink’, by his numerous cousins due to his white curly hair. He attended Saint Teresa’s Little Flower, Catholic Church and school where he started his long football career at 3-years-old as the mascot for the school team.

He attended Christian Brother’s High School where he was called ‘Shelby’ for Shelby County, Tenn., because he lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. As quarterback he was voted All-Memphis for offense and defense in football. His senior year he was recruited by the Saint Louis Cardinals. In 1998, Jack was inducted into the Christian Brother’s Hall of Fame.

At the University of Tennessee, he was known by his football teammates as ‘Cotton’. He was recruited by The Volunteers as a quarterback but ended up playing as a monster back. After his senior year he had his most defining moment in his life when he married his college sweetheart, Ellen Tidwell, wife of 52 years. After a successful career as a Volunteer he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys as a punter, but Uncle Sam drafted him to Vietnam.

During his time in Vietnam he was known as ‘The Aide’ because he was the aide to Colonel Dwight Adams. He served in the Army from 1967 to 1970 during the TET Offense.

In 1969, he became ‘Daddy’ when Jack and Ellen had their first child, Mary Claire. Four years later they had their second child, Jack Franklin II. Mary Claire would go on to marry Tommy Hopper and Jack would marry Shelby Wittenberg.

Jack was hired by Witt Stephens in 1976, to leave Union Planters in Memphis and move to Little Rock. During his 36 years at Stephens he worked his way up to Vice President

of Municipal Dealer Sales. While at Stephens he was affectionately known as ‘Bubba’ because Jack could never remember names, therefore he called people Bubba to cover this fact.

‘Papa’ was his new nickname once Taylor, his first grandchild was born. Taylor was proceeded by Shelby, Witt, and Thomas. Up until his final days he would reminisce about spending time with his grandchildren at his cabin on The Little Red River in Georgetown, Ark.

The family appreciates all the love and care they received from the VA Hospital, Clarity Pointe, St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Hospice.

FORT SMITH — Betty Christian passed from this earth in the early morning hours of

Nov. 30, 2017. She was 75 years old, her birthday being May 10, 1942.

A lifelong resident of Fort

Smith, she was the daughter of

James William and Geraldine

Ward and the older sister of James William Ward of Floral City, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, and her husband.

Betty was the high school sweetheart of Eddie Christian, and she followed him to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. They lived in Carlson Terrace Apartments while Eddie was in law school, and she worked at the Social Security office. To make extra money, Betty made peanut butter sandwiches and Eddie took them around to dormitories and sorority and fraternity houses to sell to students studying late at night. For a while, they didn’t have a car and depended on other student couples to help out. When Eddie’s father bought them an old Plymouth, they felt like they had struck gold. Betty recalled those days as hard, but fun because they were working toward a common goal.

After law school graduation, Eddie and Betty, and by this time, Eddie Jr., returned to Fort Smith where Eddie practiced law, building a fine reputation mainly as a defense attorney. A daughter, Gerri Ellen, named for both her grandmothers, joined the loving family in 1969.

Betty was a loyal wife and mother, and as the family’s finances grew, so did Betty’s determination to make a lovely home out of each house they purchased. Their final home on Park Avenue was host to many dinner parties and family celebrations. Both Betty and Eddie loved working in the yard, and their three acres was a testimony to that.

Eddie Jr. became a lawyer and practiced law with his father. Eddie Jr. died in 2010, followed by Eddie Sr., in 2013. By this time Betty was beginning to lose her eyesight and suffering from COPD. Her daughter lived with Betty for a couple of years after her father died, but at Betty’s insistence for Gerri Ellen to live her own life, she returned to her home in Memphis with her young daughter, Ryann.

Betty enjoyed bridge and played with the same bridge group for over 20 years. Her real passion, however, was the Arkansas Razorbacks, particularly the football and basketball teams. While in Hospice Care during the last days of her life, she insisted on wearing an Arkansas Razorback shirt, of which she had many.

Betty fought hard to continue with a full life in spite of her failing vision and breathing problems. This poem by Dylan Thomas exemplifies her valiant struggle:

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Survivors are her daughter, Gerri Ellen Adams and her partner Scott Larkin of Collierville, Tenn.; her granddaughters, Ryann Elizabeth Adams of Collierville, Tenn., and Regan Elise Christian and her mother, Sara Christian Latta and husband, Todd of Fort Smith; and her brother, Jim Ward and his wife, Kitty, of Floral City, Fla.

The family wishes to acknowledge Betty’s caretakers at the end of her life: Jill Hartle, Judy Wood and Jerry Davis who cared for Betty with loving compassion. Betty’s longtime neighbor and devoted friend, Nancy Vernon, brought much laughter into her life.

Rosary will be said Sunday at 7 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

A Memorial Mass for Betty Christian will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday, Dec. 4, at 10 a. m., following a private burial. A reception at the family home will follow the church service. Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

––––– ––––– SCOTT — Adolph Washington (“A.D.”) as he was affectionately called by both family and friends, had more than 30 years of experience in the music industry. A.D.’s musical brilliance allowed him to move quickly from local management to senior management positions at Universal Music Group (“MCA”), Warner Brothers Records and Capitol Records.

A.D. was born in Scott, Ark., on July 10, 1940, to William and Ida Bell Wayne Ferguson. He attended elementary school in Scott and graduated from St. Bartholomew High School in Little Rock. A.D. earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Arkansas AM&N College (University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff) and did further studies at the University of Central Arkansas.

A.D.’s career in the music industry began at Stax Records as a local Promotion Manager. After a short time at Stax, he joined MCA Records as the Southwest Regional Manager, where he excelled to the ranks of Senior Manager. As Senior Vice President of MCA Records, A.D. led his staff to unprecedented success, and ushered in the “New Jack Swing” era of popular music, which became the forerunner for today’s Hip Hop explosion. While serving as Senior Vice President at MCA, A.D.’s work with New Edition, Teddy Riley, Patti LaBelle, Bobby Brown, Mary J. Blige, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Jody Watley, Guy, Jodeci, Heavy D, & the Boyz, Stephanie Mills, and Bell Biv & Devoe, became the standard that every other label in the industry tried to match. In addition, he developed promotional and marketing campaigns for multi-platinum movie soundtracks such as “Beverly Hills Cops”, “Dangerous Minds”, “Juice”, “Ghostbusters II”, and “Tales from the Hood”.

A.D. and his staff earned multiple recognitions at industry ceremonies, providing the platform for many of his staffers to move on to senior management positions in the industry. He has received numerous awards over his career for his leadership. A.D.’s management style and his vision kept him a key player in the music business. As a giant in the industry, several executives said he was one of the most diligent, loyal, and hardest workers in the music business. A.D.’s word was his bond and if he said it, “you could take it to the bank.”

After his retirement, A.D. operated his own entertainment consulting company, A.D. Barak Corporation, which continues to have an impact on today’s music landscape.
