FORT SMITH — The first actual steps to end the general strike here were taken late today when two representa­tives of the Department of Labor at Washington met with S. D. C. Green, general manager of the Fort Smith Light and Traction Company, to discuss the propositio­n of reinstatin­g the striking union employees, whose walk-out resulted in the suspension of the only power plant in the city and brought about federal interventi­on because the power plant supplies current to several coal mines. 50 YEARS AGO

Dec. 14, 1967 HARDY — Terry C. Poteet, 12, of Hardy, was killed Tuesday when a gun discharged, striking him in the hand and chest, authoritie­s said. Officers said the Poteet boy and a friend, James Orosz, had been hunting and had returned to Orosz’ home. Authoritie­s said Orosz laid the gun down, thinking it was unloaded, and it discharged, striking Poteet.

Dec. 14, 1992 Bruce Bailey, 31, of North Little Rock was shot to death about 6 p.m. Sunday while walking with another person at Shorter College Gardens Apartments at 800 N. Beech St., North Little Rock police said. North Little Rock police received a call that shots had been fired in front of Building Eight at the apartment complex, Sgt. Steve Canady said Sunday night. When police arrived, they found Bailey dead from a gunshot wound, Canady said. He said Bailey’s last known address was the Sportsman’s Inn at 2501 E. Broadway in North Little Rock.

A Little Rock man whose blood was found on the pistol that killed an Alexander father of three was convicted of capital murder Thursday after a two-day trial and received an automatic life sentence. Marcus Allen “Lil Bush” Bush, who turns 21 in three weeks, is already serving a 20-year prison sentence for robbery and theft for a holdup two months after 30-year-old Patrick L. Edmondson was killed. Jurors deliberate­d about three hours, including through a lunch break, before delivering their verdict to Pulaski County Circuit Judge John Langston.
