Names and faces

Laurie Metcalf has won three Emmys and a Tony Award in her nearly 40-year career, but the veteran stage and screen actress still feels uncomfortable in front of a camera. She says even after all her years on Roseanne, she still finds that a camera recording her makes her feel inhibited. “All of a sudden the spotlight is right on you and every pore on your face in high definition and you think, ‘Oh, this is all I can think about.’

I can’t just turn it off,” she said. “You’d think after all these years I’d be used to it!” Metcalf is also feeling out of her element as a serious Academy Award contender for her role in the film Lady Bird, in which she plays the mother to a 17-year-old daughter who is going through a selfish phase. The 62-year-old actress has already gotten supporting actress nominations from the Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globe Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards for her work in her first film in a decade. She says she’s flattered by the attention, which she also calls surreal.

Director Ridley Scott says he hasn’t heard from actor Kevin Spacey since the decision was made to cut him from All the Money in the World. Scott says Spacey has gone “underground” and that it would have been nice to have gotten some kind of communication from the disgraced actor. Spacey, accused of sexual misconduct, was cut from the film and replaced with Christopher Plummer. Scott did the reshoots over nine days to make sure the movie was out by its planned Christmas release date. It’s now unlikely anyone will ever see what Spacey’s depiction was like. At the premiere Monday in Los Angeles, Scott said he would never authorize a director’s cut of the film with Spacey in it.
