Lane train didn’t stop in blowout

The 2017 college football season was good to Lane Kiffin.

Kiffin completed his first season as head coach at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday night, leading the Owls to a 50-3 rout of Akron in the Boca Raton Bowl.

When Florida Atlantic took a 34-3 lead midway through the third quarter, Kiffin decided to try a two-point conversion. Why?

Kiffin said after the game it was because of Akron associate athletic director George Van Horne talking a little trash during a luncheon Monday, the day before the bowl game.

“His bad,” Kiffin told reporters. Said USA Today Sports reporter Steven Ruiz: “‘His bad’ is such a Lane Kiffin thing to say. I’m imagining him saying it while putting on a pair of sunglasses and walking away laughing.

“Kiffin tried to do the right thing, but he just wasn’t capable. Running up the score wasn’t enough. He had to rub it in, too.”

What did Akron Coach Terry Bowden think of Kiffin’s decision?

“Lane was just playing football,” Bowden said. “I have no problem with it.”

It was quite the Tuesday for Kiffin, who agreed to a contract extension to stay at FAU through December 2027.

“I won’t get fired on any tarmacs,” said Kiffin, referring to when he was fired by Southern California in 2013 at Los Angeles International Aiport.
