100 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1917

TEXARKANA — John McDaniels, age 65 years, was shot through the body and died within a few minutes on West Board street, near the ice plant this afternoon. The bullet, a 45 caliber, entered from the rear. William Hackett, a horse trader, immediatel­y after the shooting surrendere­d to the officers and is being held pending an investigat­ion. It is said that Hackett was shooting at George McDaniels, a son of John McDaniels. He fired four shots from a revolver, all missing the intended victim and the only one to find a mark killed the old man, who chanced to be standing near.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1967

What the Weather Bureau at Little Rock called “the first real winter storm” charged across Arkansas Thursday morning, spawning high winds, heavy rain and at least three tornadoes that caused heavy property damage and several injuries. One twister hit the northeast area of Fort Smith and Crawford County, one was reported at Edgemont, a Cleburne County community on the northweste­rn shore of Greers Ferry Reservoir, and a third hit Hope. Another twister touched down just north of the Arkansas-Missouri state line above Mountain Home.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 22, 1992

A 15-year-old student who came to North little Rock High School-East Campus on Monday with a gunshot wound to the leg falsely reported a drive-by shooting in the parking lot, police said. Prosecutor­s may file criminal charges against the North Little Rock man who allegedly drove the boy to school after he received the wound, North Little Rock police Lt. Sam Cates said Monday. Police were called to the school campus about 9:30 a.m. Monday after two students — one with a gunshot wound to his right thigh — told school officials a drive-by shooting had occurred in the parking lot.

A Pulaski County jail deputy was arrested Friday and accused of smuggling marijuana into the jail for inmates, authoritie­s said. Walter Lee Washington, 22, of Conway admitted taking marijuana into the jail for inmates nine times and taking money for the delivery, police said. Washington has been an employee of the sheriff ’s office since August. He has been placed on administra­tive leave without pay pending the outcome of an internal investigat­ion, spokesman John Rehrauer said. Jail employees aren’t allowed to give inmates anything that is considered contraband.
