PINE BLUFF — Following a two-day session of a grand jury, which was unexpectedly summoned yesterday morning by Judge W. B. Sorrels, who enjoined the strictest secrecy upon all jurors, Constable Clint C. Green, Deputy Constable Jim Reidinger, Ed Daniels, Clarence Farris and G. W. Morgan were late this evening, arrested on charges of selling liquor, or charges connected with sale of liquor. Constable Green was indicted on four counts, which charge conspiracy, nonfeasance, accessory before the fact and accessory after the fact, of bribery.

MORRILTON —Circuit Judge Bobby Steel of Nashville has scheduled the second phase of the trial of an accounting suit against Conway County Sheriff Marlin Hawkins to start February 19. Judge Steel, in a letter last week to lawyers in the case and Conway Circuit Clerk Millard Richardson, gave notice of the date he would resume the trial. Hawkins is to present his defense then. Originally Judge Steel tentatively had scheduled the second part of the trial to begin January 2.

BENTON —A Saline County man apparently killed his wife, then turned the gun on himself in a pre-dawn incident New Year’s Day, Saline County Sheriff Judy Pridgen said. Dead are David Ray Rusher, 31, and Jacquelyn Kay Rusher, 36, both of 1161 Denny Drive in the Salem community near Benton, Pridgen said. The 12-year-old son of Jacquelyn Rusher ran to a neighboring house about 3:50 a.m. and asked them to call 911, Pridgen said. The boy said he heard, but did not see, his step-father shoot his mother, then shoot himself.

Frank Esry liked boats and fishing. His hobbies went with his job — Esry oversaw water inspectors for the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality. Esry recently bought a new boat and was taking it for a test run Monday when authorities believe the vessel’s steering malfunctioned and he fell into the Arkansas River. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission identified Esry on Tuesday as the missing boater they’d been looking for since Monday afternoon when an employee at Dillard’s headquarters called police to say he saw a boat running in circles on the river.
