100 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1918

FORT SMITH — The remaining criminal case growing out of the Rush Distillery moonshine conspiracy exposed here a few days ago will not be tried at the coming session of the United States District Court. The Department of Justice at Washington has requested a continuanc­e. The case is against Guy Hartman, who is now a lieutenant in the United States army. Hartman, after being decoyed from Mexico and arrested, made a confession. Criminal cases pending against former officers of the defunct American National bank will not be tried at this term, it was announced.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1968

JONESBORO — Mrs. Patsy Bland, 18, of Weiner (Poinsett County) died Thursday at a hospital here of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning, two days after the death of her husband. Willis Bland, 28, was found dead in their home Tuesday and Mrs. Bland and their daughter, Tina, 2, were discovered unconsciou­s. The daughter remained in critical condition at a hospital here Thursday. Coroner Homer Bata of Poinsett County said Thursday an autopsy showed that Bland died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1993

ROGERS — A yearlong undercover drug investigat­ion ended Monday with the arrest of 19 people. The 19th Judicial District Drug Task Force, including the Rogers police, Benton County sheriff’s deputies and Arkansas State Police, began serving warrants they had for 31 people. The suspects were wanted on charges ranging from delivery of marijuana to delivery of cocaine and methamphet­amine, Rogers police Lt. Steve Russell said.

m A 21-year-old Little Rock woman whose tip to police helped solve a double murder, leading to a capital murder conviction and life sentence for her former boyfriend, was released from jail Friday after a Pulaski County Circuit judge allowed her to post bail on a perjury charge. Colleen Denise Wright had been jailed since Dec. 19, when she was formally charged with lying under oath at Cameron Duane Williams’ November capital murder trial. Circuit Judge Barry Sims ordered her held without bail — a ruling that sent Wright into hysterics. She collapsed crying and had to be carried out of the courtroom.
