Free day of baseball set in Oakland

-

Sometimes, things in life can be free.

Such as a ticket to an Oakland Athletics ticket.

The A’s are celebrating their 50th anniversary in Oakland, Calif., in 2018 by giving away free tickets to their April 17 game against the Chicago White Sox at the Oakland Coliseum.

“We are extremely excited to offer this gift to the city as we celebrate 50 years in Oakland,” said A’s President Dave Kaval in a news release. “The entire 2018 season will be a celebration of the A’s rich history, and offering the first free MLB game is another unique way for us to celebrate our team and wonderful fans.”

Tickets will be available beginning at 10 a.m. Central on Wednesday. Season ticket holders automatically will get free tickets.

In addition to the tickets being free, parking is also free, since it is a Tuesday game. All A’s games on Tuesdays feature free parking.

The Oakland Coliseum holds 47,170 for baseball games.

“So will the A’s, in addition to letting fans catch this game for free, also mark their 50th anniversary in Oakland by winning the World Series? No,” wrote Dayn Perry of CBSSports. com.

Sizing up Garrett

Tim Cowlishaw of The Dallas

Morning News compares Dallas Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett to Cincinnati Bengals Coach Marvin Lewis.

Lewis, who has been with the Bengals since 2003, signed a twoyear extension through the 2019 season to remain in Cincinnati.

Garrett will remain with the Cowboys for an eighth season in 2018 despite missing the playoffs in 2017.

“Garrett, for better or worse, is the Lewis of the NFC. Yes, he has won a playoff game. But where does the belief that he and his staff will win big games — like Seattle two weeks ago, not his proud triumph of a second-string Eagles team Sunday — come from?” Cowlishaw wrote.

“Does [Jerry] Jones honestly believe the odds are in Garrett’s favor, that the ball is going to bounce his way in the Cowboys’ next playoff game? And that that game is only 12 months away?

“If so, he’s putting more stock in Garrett’s 67-53 record than I ever could. Losing crucial games means something over time. And a repetitive manner of losing games in which simple adjustments fail to get made (helping out Chaz Green at tackle, stopping the blitzing of Philip Rivers when he is carving your secondary apart) leaves Cowboys fans feeling betrayed, accusing Jones of caring more about the millions he rakes in each season than expanding the club’s trophy case.”

Playoff giveaway

The owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars will donate 1,000 playoff tickets to refugees from around the world, and to Puerto Ricans displaced by Hurricane Maria who have settled in the Jacksonville area.

The Florida Times-Union reported that the team also will provide 1,500 tickets to local military members at a subsidized cost of $20 each for Sunday’s AFC wild-card game against the Buffalo Bills.

Owner Shahid Khan said in a statement that “the Jaguars’ first playoff appearance in a very long time is an event that should be shared with as many people as possible, across all spectrums, who call Jacksonville their home.”

The Jaguars Foundation enlisted the Lutheran Social Services of Northeast Florida, the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Latino Leadership to identify individuals for tickets.
