–––––❖––––– CONNIE LaVERNE HAY, 67, of North Little Rock passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018. She was born September 22, 1950 in Little Rock, Ark..

She is survived by her husband, Johnny Hay; daughter, Tiffany (David) Sparks; mother, Doris Adcock; brother, Ricky (Margaret) Adcock; two grandsons, Tucker and Bear Sparks. She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Adcock; and her sister, Carolyn Adcock Wellenberger.

Connie was a true homemaker and everyone who walked in their house felt at home. Her first love was Johnny and they had a bond that could not be broken. They shared everything in life especially laughter which was felt by everyone around them. Connie took care of Johnny and Johnny took care of Connie — all done with a sense of loyalty, commitment, and love that all marriages should be built on.

Her next love was her daughter,

Tiffany, whom she adored. Connie always said that in Tiffany, she got “exactly what she prayed for!” She was a devoted mom who doted and bragged on her only daughter for 26 years — until she had her first grandson, Tucker. Then she became MeMee — a name she would cherish for 18 years and wore proudly (even on her license plate). Her second grandson, Bear, came along 20 months later and her job as MeMee was full-time. She loved her boys with her whole heart. Her favorite past-time was watching Tucker and Bear play baseball. She was an avid fan and her presence at their games was palpable.

Connie was feisty, opinionated, spunky, hilarious, comforting, and unique — most importantly, she was faithful. She was faithful to her family but first to God. She prayed every day without fail and truly had faith that would move mountains. She never said “it can’t be done” and wouldn’t tolerate anyone else uttering those words. Connie will be missed deeply but in the beautiful words of her great niece Ann Claire Johnson — “I can’t wait to see her in all the fabulousness that surrounds us.”

Memorials may be made to Children’s Homes, 5515 Walcott Road, Paragould, Ark. 72450. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Levy Church of Christ. Burial will be in Rest Hills Memorial Park. A visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Smith – North Little Rock Funeral Home. HOT SPRINGS — The family of Barbara Bitely Staton Holley of Hot Springs, formerly of Pine Bluff, would like you all to know that God has finally called her to join Him and her precious husband, Herbert, in Heaven. She’s been longing for that trip for a while and she got her ticket on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

She never stopped praising how sweet, thoughtful and wonderful Herb was and how thankful she was that God had brought them together in 1983. The last 16 months, without Herb by her side, were difficult for Barbara. But now, they are finally together again, strolling down the golden streets, hand in hand. Herb is likely smiling and nodding as Barbara is telling him an interesting story from her past.

So, while Heaven is rejoicing at Herb and Barbara’s reunion, her family and many friends are missing her and her “stories” (and she had a million of them). If you didn’t know Barbara but happened to meet her while walking across a parking lot or sitting in a waiting room, you would soon know lots of her childhood memories and many details of her life. She never

met a stranger that she couldn’t talk to. Even people who might have accidentally dialed a wrong number would find themselves being regaled with her funny little tidbits (or sagas) and being surprised at finding they had been talking for 30 minutes or more to that “wrong number”. She loved to talk, but also loved her church, First Baptist of Hot Springs, watching the Razorbacks play, creating beautiful quilts, and watching Dr. Phil.

She will certainly be missed by her surviving sister, Beatrice Bitely Miles of Guild, Tenn.; her children, Marsha Staton Kealer of Malvern, Greg Staton of Bonnerdale, and Beth Staton Boshears (Bowden) of Little Rock; and her step-children, Sharon Holley Hanson, Terry Holley and Bruce Holley. She will also leave a gap in the lives of her nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many friends from everywhere.

Barbara was born September 7, 1934 at Tamo, Ark. to Cyrus and Hazel Cooksey Bitely, who both preceded her in death along with her brother, Beyrl Bitely, and son-in-law, David Kealer.

Visitation will be Thursday, January 25, 2017, starting at noon in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors in Pine Bluff. The memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. with Dr. John McCallum officiating. Interment will be private.

Memorials are requested to First Baptist Church, 2530 Central Avenue, Hot Springs, Ark. 71901. Barbara and much of her history will be remembered for a long time, but the best story has just begun. Now she’s finally home for eternity. For online condolences, please visit www. RalphRobinsonandSon.com.

–––––❖––––– QUITMAN — Ralph Lane Bivens, of Quitman, Arkansas, beloved brother, uncle and friend, died peacefully in his sleep early last Saturday morning at Good Shepherd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Little Rock. He was born on October 24, 1934. He was 83 at the time of his passing. He was the youngest of five children born to H.P and Esther Bivens in a farmhouse which still stands in the Pearson Community just outside of Quitman.

Uncle Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Virginia Riggs “Ginger” Bivens; a brother, William Henry Bivens and his wife Jean Bivens; and his sister, Donice Bivens Bowen and her husband A.C. “Buck” Bowen; along with a niece, Lesa Means.

He is survived by his brother Howard Bivens (Marlene) of Louisville, Kentucky; and his sister, Charlsie Gadberry (Joe) of Bixby, Oklahoma. He is also survived by three nieces, Jananne Reding (David) of Little Rock, Rebecca Parke (Steve) of Fort Smith and Alice Campbell (Gary) of Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is survived by four nephews, Arthur Paul Bowen and John V. Bowen (Michelle) of Little Rock, David Russell Bowen of Rogersville, Missouri, and Robert Lane Bowen (Shirley) of Conway. Bob and Paul share Uncle Ralph’s birth date of October 24, an arcane fact that always delighted all three. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews along with their respective children.

Uncle Ralph was never afraid of hard work. He worked on the farm with his brothers and father. He worked as a sawmill hand. He went to Indiana in the early nineteen fifties to work in the steel industry. He spent most of his career as a steelworker for Bethlehem Steel at the Slab Mill in the Burns Harbor Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan next to his adopted home in Valporaiso, Indiana. In 1983, he returned to Pearson to care for his mother after she sustained a stroke. Upon his return to Arkansas, he obtained work with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (as it is referred to now) as a member of a road crew. He worked for the ADOT until he retired once and for all.

He kept busy in his retirement years tending to his property and to the happy country home in Pearson he shared with Ginger until her death in 2008. He was an excellent basketball player for the Quitman Bulldogs back in the day and he maintained a lifelong avid interest in the game and in high school teams in the area. Gentle and stubborn in equal measure, he loved his family and it gave him great happiness to help them whenever he could. He loved bacon and eggs for breakfast with black coffee. He enjoyed tinkering with farm equipment and trading cars. And when it came time to tell a story, nobody, as in nobody, could tell one like Uncle Ralph. His passing leaves a very real void in our family. But we will always cherish the stories.

Uncle Ralph was of the Baptist faith. A graveside service will be conducted January 25 at Pearson Cemetery adjacent to the Palestine Baptist Church in Quitman at 1 p.m. The family requests that memorial gifts in his honor be made to Arkansas Hospice. The family also wishes to thank Arkansas Hospice and the Aldersgate Memory Unit at Good Shepherd for the skilled and compassionate care given to Uncle Ralph during his time there. –––––❖––––– WACO, Texas — Gloria “Dodie” Clark Cook went to be with Jesus on January 20, 2018 in Waco, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, January 25, 2018, at The First Methodist Church of Waco, 4901 Cobbs Drive, with Pastor Wayne Williams officiating. Visitation will proceed the memorial at 1:30 p.m., at the church.

‘Dodie’ was born in Madison, Arkansas, on Valentine’s Day, 1934, to Pearl and Merwin Clark. Her family relocated to Pine Bluff, Arkansas where she attended school. During High School, she and her future husband, Charles ‘Cookie’ Cook became ‘sweethearts’ and were married December 26, 1952 during their Freshman year in college.

Their first child King was born in 1954, as Cookie graduated from USMC boot camp. They were stationed in 29 Palms, California, for two years, before returning to college on The GI Bill. Cookie earned a BS in Engineering from The University of Tulsa in 1959 and immediately joined the Magnolia Petroleum Company as a Geophysical Engineer.

During this time Cookie and Dodie moved around and lived in many locations in the southwest. Their journey to find a home ended when they settled in Woodway in 1967, Texas where they would rear their three sons, King, David, and Dan Pat.

Cookie and Dodie were one of the early residents of Woodway and were recently featured in the Woodway Today newsletter as one of the longest residing families of Woodway. Dodie and Joyce Bowden procured funds from The Cooper Foundation in 1971 to build the Woodway Boys Club, now, the Woodway Family Center.

In 1971, Cookie joined Chemical Lime Company as sales manager. This led Dodie into a new life of supporting Cookie in the marketing arena attending various business functions. She was an instant hit with new friends and business associates establishing her ‘charm and enthusiasm’ wherever they went. After retirement in 1999, they enjoyed traveling on ‘small boat’ cruises, senior golf events, following the Baylor Bears and visiting many old friends from high school days. Their calendar was always filled with plans to visit family and friends.

Dodie was a “stay at home” Mom, refereeing the sandlot games in their large backyard. She followed the boys religiously throughout their high school sports careers as well as raising animals for their FFA projects. She was an active member of The First Methodist Church of Waco and the New Beginnings Sunday School class.

She taught Sunday School with Cookie, chaperoned youth groups on mission trips, served the ‘meals on wheels’ ministry and attended many bible studies through the years. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with signs of dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

She continued to be a part of the church and community, but her cognitive skills became very limited. Unfortunately, an accidental fall in December 2017 fractured her spine and brought on a serious physical and mental decline. She entered Wesley Woods on January 2, 2018 for increased care and comfort during her final days.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joyce Young; and brother, Gene Clark. Dodie is survived by her husband, Charles; sons, King and wife, Barbara, David and wife, Karen, Dan Pat and wife, Cindy; grandchildren, Hunter Cook, Spencer Cook, Meredith Cook, Lexie Chapman, and Hannah Cook; and sister, Gwen Stevens.

Dodie will always be remembered as a Mom, Grandmother and Wife that ‘Exceeded Expectations’ in all phases of her life!
