–––––❖––––– CABOT — Deklan Hicks McKee was healed and went to his forever home in heaven on January 23rd,

2018, after a long battle with

CDH and CHD.

He was born on

July 11, 2017, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Deklan’s name means “man of prayer” and this was perfectly fitting for him because this baby brought so many people to their knees. People from many different faiths, people from all over the world, came together with Deklan’s family and friends to pray. These prayers were heard and answered when God blessed us with six months and twelve days to love this precious baby.

He is survived by: his loving parents, Jason and Tiffany Hicks McKee; his sister, Julia McKee; a special aunt, Izabelle Ward; maternal grandparents, Tammy Ward, Ron and Connie Hicks; paternal grandparents, Ken McKee, Tim and Sharon McMinn; maternal great-grandparents, Bill and Helen Poe, Ronnie and Sue Hicks; paternal great-grandmother, Doris Wingo; maternal great-great-grandmother, Julia Hicks; maternal aunts, Alicia (Kyle) Gardner, Jessica (Heath) Futrell; maternal uncle, Nathan (Stacy) Barber; paternal aunt LeAnn (Rick) Beckwith; paternal uncles Brian (Briar) McKee, Jimmy (Stacey) McMinn, Timmy (Lori) McMinn and numerous cousins. Everyone who met Deklan was mesmerized by him. He had the most beautiful round face that displayed deep dark eyes that many said could tell stories. However, his “squishy” cheeks and perfectly kissable, sweet lips were the first things people noticed about him. Deklan impacted many, many lives in his short time here on Earth. He will forever be in our hearts.

We would like to express our love and gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and all medical staff who cared for Deklan. We are especially thankful for Dr. David Kays and staff at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, for fighting so hard and never giving up. If you would like to read about Deklan’s journey you can follow us on Facebook at Deklan’s CDH and CHD Journey.

–––––❖––––– FAYETTEVILLE — Stephen James Chism was born in Galveston, Texas, on October 18, 1953, son of James Clyde Chism and Evelyn Fay Taylor Chism. Steve spent most of his life in Northwest Arkansas, graduating from Fayetteville High School in 1971 and the University of Arkansas in 1975. He earned his Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Kentucky and worked first at the LSU library. He then was hired at the University of Arkansas Libraries where he was on the library faculty for 26 years. Frequently in coffee shops, restaurants, and stores, former students approached us to thank Steve for how much he had helped them. He especially took time with new students, showing them how to find information in the “stacks” and in databases. Steve was also the “go-to guy” for students with special needs.

Steve is remembered as kind, friendly, caring, generous. He published journal articles and three books, his favorite a dictionary of palindromes (that spell the same backwards as forwards). Art was one of Steve’s hobbies—he had two one-man shows in University galleries. Pieces of his art are in the University Libraries and in the homes of many friends. Some of his imaginative works were fashioned from found objects.

Steve is survived by his wife of 28 years, Andrea Cantrell, and his sisters Susan Chism Hansen and Laura Chism Meyers of Little Rock, and many family and friends who loved him.

Our sympathy goes out to all sufferers of early onset Alzheimer’s and to family members who love and care for them. To place an online tribute visit www.nelsonberna.com.

–––––❖––––– QUITMAN — Ralph Lane Bivens, of Quitman, Arkansas, beloved brother, uncle and friend, died peacefully in his sleep early last Saturday morning at Good Shepherd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Little Rock. He was born on October 24, 1934. He was 83 at the time of his passing.

He was the youngest of 5 children born to H.P and Esther Bivens in a farmhouse which still stands in the Pearson Community just outside of Quitman.

Uncle Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Virginia Riggs “Ginger” Bivens, a brother, William Henry Bivens and his wife Jean Bivens and his sister, Donice Bivens Bowen and her husband A.C. “Buck” Bowen, along with a niece, Lesa Means. He is survived by his brother Howard Bivens (Marlene) of Louisville, Kentucky, and his sister, Charlsie Gadberry (Joe) of Bixby, Oklahoma. He is also survived by three nieces, Jananne Reding (David) of Little Rock, Rebecca Parke (Steve) of Fort Smith and Alice Campbell (Gary) of Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is survived by five nephews, Brian Bivens (Amy) of Louisville, Kentucky, Arthur Paul Bowen and John V. Bowen (Michelle) of Little Rock, David Russell Bowen of Rogersville, Missouri and Robert Lane Bowen (Shirley) of Conway. Bob and Paul share Uncle Ralph’s birth date of October 24, an arcane fact that always delighted all three. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews along with their respective children.

Uncle Ralph was never afraid of hard work. He worked on the farm with his brothers and father. He worked as a sawmill hand. He went to Indiana in the early nineteen fifties to work in

the steel industry. He spent most of his career as a steelworker for Bethlehem Steel at the Slab Mill in the Burns Harbor Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan next to his adopted home in Valparaiso, Indiana. In 1983, he returned to Pearson to care for his mother after she sustained a stroke. Upon his return to Arkansas, he obtained work with the Arkansas Department of Transportation (as it is referred to now) as a member of a road crew. He worked for the ADOT until he retired once and for all. He kept busy in his retirement years tending to his property and to the happy country home in Pearson he shared with Ginger until her death in 2008. He was an excellent basketball player for the Quitman Bulldogs back in the day and he maintained a lifelong avid interest in the game and in high school teams in the area. Gentle and stubborn in equal measure, he loved his family and it gave him great happiness to help them whenever he could. He loved bacon and eggs for breakfast with black coffee. He enjoyed tinkering with farm equipment and trading cars. And when it came time to tell a story, nobody, as in nobody, could tell one like Uncle Ralph. His passing leaves a very real void in our family. But we will always cherish the stories. Uncle Ralph was of the Baptist faith.

A graveside service will be conducted January 25 at Pearson Cemetery adjacent to the Palestine Baptist Church in Quitman at 1 p.m. The family requests that memorial gifts in his honor be made to Arkansas Hospice. The family also wishes to thank Arkansas Hospice and the Aldersgate Memory Unit at Good Shepherd for the skilled and compassionate care given to Uncle Ralph during his time there.
