Pair helps Texas rout Iowa State

TOP 25 WOMEN NO. 6 TEXAS 87, IOWA STATE 55

AUSTIN, Texas — Ariel Atkins scored 15 points, Lashann Higgs added 14 and No. 6 Texas clobbered Iowa State 87-55 on Saturday night.

Jatarie White and Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau, both 6-foot-4, and 6-3 Joyner Holmes contribute­d 12 points apiece as the bigger, more physical and athletic Longhorns outscored Iowa State 32-20 in the paint.

Holmes had a game-high 11 rebounds, leading Texas (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) to a 40-27 advantage in that category.

Emily Durr led Iowa State (9-12, 3-7) with 20 points, converting seven of 10 field-goal attempts, and Bridget Carleton added 19.

The Longhorns led 39-30 at halftime despite strong efforts from Durr and Carleton.

Durr scored the first nine points for Iowa State, nearly matching her season average of 9.4 a game. Carleton then joined in, scoring 12 in the half, one more than Durr.

Carleton’s three-pointer gave Iowa State a 29-28 lead with 4:19 left in the half.

NO. 1 CONNECTICU­T 98, TULANE 45

STORRS, Conn. — Katie Lou Samuelson scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half to lead Connecticu­t to a rout of Tulane and a 20-0 start to the season for the 11th time in program history.

Kia Nurse scored 14 for the Huskies (9-0 American Athletic Conference) and tied a career high with seven rebounds. UConn had six players in double figures for the sixth time this season.

The Huskies shot 72 percent from the floor and outscored Tulane 50-18 in the paint and 15-0 on the fast break. Kayla Manuiriran­gi led Tulane (11-10, 3-5 American) with 13 points.

NO. 12 OHIO STATE 78, MICHIGAN STATE 62

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kelsey Mitchell scored 23 points to become the Big Ten’s all-time leading scorer and No. 12 Ohio State ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over Michigan State.

Mitchell, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, has scored 3,098 points, passing Rachel Barham, who scored 3,093 in her career at Minnesota. Mitchell made four three-pointers, extending her NCAA career record to 449.

Linnae Harper added 22 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals and Stephanie Mavunga 20 points and 9 rebounds for the Buckeyes (17-5, 6-3).

NO. 19 OKLAHOMA STATE 80, TEXAS TECH 62

STILLWATER, Okla. — Kaylee Jensen scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Loryn Goodwin had 20 points, 8 assists and 5 steals to help No. 19 Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech.

Braxtin Miller finished with 16 points, two blocks and three steals for the Cowgirls (15-5, 6-3 Big 12).

Goodwin and Jensen scored eight points apiece as Oklahoma State built a 25-18 lead at the end of the first quarter before going into the break with a fivepoint lead. Miller scored the first five points in a 13-2 run to open the second half and Texas Tech (7-14, 1-9) trailed by double figures the rest of the way.

FORT WORTH — Lauren Heard scored 12 points, including the game-tying three-pointer, and Amber Ramirez scored all nine of her points in the final two minutes to secure No. 24 TCU’s victory over Oklahoma.

The Horned Frogs (15-5, 6-3 Big 12), playing as a ranked team at home for the first time since Nov. 17, 2010, won their sixth consecutiv­e, their longest run since an eight-game streak in 2010-11. The win also ended a seven-game losing streak to the Sooners (10-11, 5-5), including an 81-74 loss on Jan. 4.
