OZARK — Trial of Arthur Davis, indicted for first degree murder, charged with the killing of Alvin Russell at Alix about six weeks ago, began in Circuit Court here yesterday. Seventy witnesses will testify. Willie Russell, son of Alvin Russell, testified that he and Marvin Davis had a fight in the mines previous to the shooting. He said that Arthur Davis appeared after a few minutes and that two shots were fired, both hitting his (Russell’s) father. He said that his father then fired, the bullet hitting Marvin Davis, who died 24 hours later.

Governor Rockefeller attempted to include such a provision in the Department of Correction bill approved during the General Assembly’s special session last month, but withdrew it under pressure from the legislators. The Board acted with no debate and little comment. The rest of its three-hour meeting was spent discussing crops that should be planted at the prisons this year.

Arkansas POW-MIA Verification Task Force members and a Vietnam-veterans lobbyist group have obtained power of attorney from the families of some missing Arkansas soldiers to search federal records on their behalf, officials said Sunday. Documents declassified in late 1992 show that one Arkansan listed as missing in action in Southeast Asia allegedly was sighted as recently as March 1991, according to Paul Howell, president of the veterans group. He made the statement during a Sunday news conference in Little Rock.

The man police believe drove the getaway car in a shooting at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock earlier this week surrendered to authorities Friday night. Michael Jones, 21, accompanied by an attorney, turned himself in to campus police about 8:30 p.m. He is charged with first-degree battery and aggravated robbery. He was being booked into the Pulaski County jail late Friday. Police were still searching for the gunman. A warrant was issued Friday for Jones, officials said. “I’ve got one warrant, but I have to get another,” said UALR Police Chief Brad King.
