Jonesboro Westside thrives on threes

BROOKLAND — A hot third quarter allowed Jonesboro Westside to win its first Class 4A state tournament game Wednesday.

Sophomore guard Riley Felkins led the Warriors with 25 points, including 4 three-pointers, and junior guard Avery Felts finished with 18 points and 10 assists to lead the Warriors in a 7343 victory over Booneville at Bearcat Arena.

“They did a good job coming out with a lot of energy,” Jonesboro Westside Coach Mark Whitmire said. “They did everything they had to do to give themselves a chance. I was proud of our guys.”

With Wednesday’s victory, Jonesboro Westside (246) — which shot 25 of 39 from the floor and made 12 three-pointers — will play Bauxite at 8:30 tonight.

Jonesboro Westside used a 22-5 third quarter to pull away from Booneville, taking a 6539 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Felkins scored eight consecutiv­e points to make it 5135 with 5:48 left in the third quarter. Cullen Felkins then added four three-pointers later in the quarter to make it 65-39.

The Warriors increased the lead to 70-39 with 7:16 remaining.

Cullen Felkins had 18 points, all from three-point range, for the Warriors.

Booneville was held to 3-of-34 shooting in the second half and 16 of 60 overall. Junior guard Blakley Cobb, who had 17 points in the first half, was held scoreless in the final two quarters.

“Early on, they did a good job of getting their guys the ball,” Whitmire said. “In the second half, we came out knowing where he was. We tried to make some other ones hit some shots. We did a really good job defensivel­y in the second half.”

Booneville (20-16) was led by Cobb and Avery Bradley, who each had 17 points.

PEA RIDGE 56, DUMAS 55

Dumas senior forward Trey Slater couldn’t get his jumper to fall as time expired, and Pea Ridge (28-6) escaped with a victory over the Bobcats.

Junior guard Nick Coble led the Blackhawks with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Hayden Holtgrewe had 15 points while junior forward Mikey Mahoney added 10 points.

Pea Ridge led 23-22 at halftime, but sophomore guard Chris Harris scored Dumas’ first six points of the third quarter to give the Bobcats a 28-23 lead. Pea Ridge answered with a 14-0 run, capped by Coble’s three-pointer for a 37-28 advantage with 1:06 left in the third quarter.

Dumas (19-12) was led by freshman forward Tarmarja Parker with 17 points. Slater scored 14 points, senior guard Kyon Smith had 12 points, and Harris scored all 10 of his points in the second half.

RIVERVIEW 64, WARREN 61

J.T. Smith finished with 22 points and seven assists and Riverview (25-9) defeated Warren (21-9).

Quinton Brown scored 21 points for the Pirates.

The Pirates led 30-28 at halftime and used a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 39-30 with 3:41 left in the third quarter. It was 46-36 Riverview at the end of the third quarter.

Cobe Muldrew’s basket cut the Pirates’ lead to 63-61 with 23 seconds left.

Warren had a chance to tie the game, but two three-point attempts from Treylon Burks and Jamalachi Kinnard did not fall as time expired.

Javion Robinson led the Lumberjack­s with 21 points. Muldrew added 19 points.
