Penny Choate’s career as an attorney has spanned almost 17 years, during which time she has enjoyed growing Choate Law Firm, PLLC in Searcy into one of the most well-respected law firms in the region.

Choate began her law career in 2001 and has experience in state and federal court. She opened Choate Law firm in 2004 and moved the practice to Searcy in 2007.

“I love being able to work with such a diverse group of people here,” she said.

Along with Choate’s dedication to the practice of law, she is a tough competitor in the horse-show arena and is a cattle rancher. Choate and her son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Brooke Collins, raise Brangus beef cattle in White County and farm hay for the operation. Choate and her husband, David Choate, enjoyed ranching together until he died last March. Choate decided to continue the cow/calf operation because of her love for the work.

Choate Law Firm, PLLC is the only law firm that is a member of the White County Cattlemen’s Association. Choate works hands-on in the cattle operation — herding, vaccinating, ear-tagging and more. There’s no doubt that she is tough enough for the job.

Choate said practicing in the same community in which she grew up has also been rewarding because she is able to help friends and neighbors with their legal needs. She has even had some of her former teachers become estate planning clients.

A staff of five women works in Choate’s off ice, including Tasha Terry, associate attorney. Choate also has three other full-time employees, and she hires interns from Harding University. Choate said she believes it is important to set a good example for women and girls who are interested in the practice of law.

“Unless they can experience seeing a woman in that role, it is sometimes difficult to envision a particular career path,” she said.
