What we’ve wrought

-

Ever since the election of Ronald Wilson Reagan in 1980, a perfect storm has been brewing. My office was directly across from the Washington Hilton Hotel’s Presidential Entrance in Washington, D.C. The day Reagan was shot, I was working at my desk and heard what sounded like firecrackers. I turned around and saw the back of the presidential limousine departing.

We turned on the radio and heard first that the president was dead. Then, he was alive in the emergency room at George Washington University Hospital. An attorney in our office was afraid that her husband, Jerry Parr, had been shot also.

It crossed my mind at the time that the Book of Revelation states something about 666 being “wounded to death,” but that the wound would heal, and the world “wondered” after him.

Supply-side (trickle-down) economics became the golden calf of many of the world economies. Reagan’s principle deeds were the repeal of fairness in broadcasting and tripling of the federal debt. Republicans worshiped him. Big money later established Fox News and Fox News Radio to sing his praises and ridicule Democrats. Rush Limbaugh became the darling of the right and essentially leader of the Republican Party.

If you get your news from Fox News, try giving MSNBC equal time. The Republican Party exploits many single-issue voters to vote against their own interests to protect the unborn, the right to own guns, to restrict marriage or immigration, or because science is on the side of Satan.

George Orwell said, “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.” My friends on the right, what have you elected? Be honest. We must bring back fairness in broadcasting. A nation divided against itself cannot stand.
