100 YEARS AGO April 9, 1918

HERMITAGE — Mr. Fred Ederington and family were on a visit to Little Rock and during the night some negroes passing by, knowing that the family was away from home, thought they saw someone in the house with a light. They spread the alarm that the house was being robbed and in a short time the neighbors gathered around the house with shotguns and clubs of various kinds, anxious to make a capture. Mr. Gamill was directed to the window where the light could be seen so brightly, and on close observatio­n he discovered that it was only the moon shining through a window and reflecting on a mirror.

50 YEARS AGO April 9, 1968

FAYETTEVIL­LE — A delegation of 23 Negro Students paid a surprise visit Monday to University of Arkansas President David W. Mullins and urged him to dismiss classes today for the funeral of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Three hours later, after consulting the deans of the U of A’s colleges, Dr. Mullins announced that classes would be dismissed until 12:30 p.m. In addition, the students asked for and received a message of sympathy to Mrs. King from Dr. Mullins. It was taken by two Negro students who flew to Atlanta for the funeral.

25 YEARS AGO April 9, 1993

BULL SHOALS — Bonnie Budolfson, 43, of Bull Shoals (Marion County), a former City Council member, died Wednesday night after being accidental­ly shot in the head by her husband, Robert Budolfson, Bull Shoals Police Chief Bob Wochner said Thursday. The accident occurred Wednesday while the Budolfsons were hunting armadillos on a golf course they own, Wochner said. “They were trying to eliminate damage being done at the course, and in the process of tracking down armadillos, he slipped and fell going up an embankment, carrying a .22 caliber rifle, and it discharged,” Wochner said.

The results of a survey of Pulaski County voter opinions prompted the county School Board on Tuesday night to scrap plans to send a millage increase to the ballot this fall. Board members of the Pulaski County Special School District will delay an election on the issue for at least a year because there doesn’t appear to be strong support for an increase. Board members have talked informally since November about a tax increase to repair or replace aging schools. But only a third of voters surveyed said they would strongly support a millage increase.
