TODAY ‘Piece of My Soul’

“A Piece of My Soul: Quilts by Black Arkansans,” a selection from the museum’s collection of more 100 quilts from the post-Reconstruc­tion era to the present, opens with a reception, 6-8 p.m. today at the Old State House Museum, 300 W. Markham St., Little Rock. The exhibit will be up through fall 2019; museum hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Admission to the reception and museum is free. Choose-a your Sousa

The audience will choose the John Philip Sousa march for the Little Rock Wind Symphony and conductor Israel Getzov to perform (from a ballot of three or four marches out of the more than 135 marches Sousa composed) to close a concert titled “Forward March!” at 7:30 p.m. today, Second Presbyteri­an Church, 600 Pleasant Valley Drive, Little Rock. Writing Life

Authors Molly McCully Brown (The Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feeblemind­ed; Oxford American magazine’s 2017-18 Jeff Baskin Writers Fellow) and Seth Pennington (Tertulia; editor-in-chief at Little Rockbased Sibling Rivalry Press) tell stories about writing, life, and the intersecti­on of the two for Potluck & Poison Ivy, 7 p.m. today at The Joint, 301 Main St., North Little Rock. UCA bands

The University of Central Arkansas Symphonic and University Bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. today in the Recital Hall, Snow Fine Arts Center, UCA, 201 Donaghey Ave., Conway.

The University Band will play Flourish for Wind Band by Ralph Vaughan Williams, conducted by Davis Norton;

American Jubilee by Charles Booker, conducted by Mykala Parker; The Wayfaring Stranger by Steve Rouse, conducted by Justin Gavito; Overture in

B Flat by Caesar Giovannini, conducted by Cody Ford; and Imaginariu­m by Randall D.Standridge, conducted by McKenzie Vivianno.

The Symphonic Band program includes Gavorkna Fanfare by Jack Stamp, conducted by Vivianno; Symphonic Prelude on “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair” by Alfred Reed, conducted by Gavito; and The Divine Comedy by Robert W. Smith, conducted by Associate Director of Bands Brantley Douglas.

FRIDAY Walpurgisn­acht recital

Jason Pennington-Saugey, associate director of music and organist at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, will play the third in a series of four dedicatory organ programs celebratin­g the completion of the cathedral organ’s year-long renovation and tonal reconfigur­ation, 7 p.m. Friday at the cathedral, 310 W. 17th St., Little Rock. The program, also timed toward Walpurgisn­acht, an annual convention of dark spirits on a mountain in central Germany, includes the tone poem

SATURDAY Food festival

The Internatio­nal Food Festival, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, 3221 Anna St., Little Rock, will focus on food, culture and music from Jamaica, Africa, Jordan, Palestine, China, Greece, the Mediterran­ean, Bangladesh and India. There will also be a shopping bazaar, dance, entertainm­ent and kids activities including train rides, a bounce house and a magician. Admission is free. Garden market

Steampunk Festival

More than 100 vendors will be on hand for the Old Timers Day Steampunk Festival, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday in downtown Van Buren. Entertainm­ent will include stilt walkers, jugglers and hula hoop artists roaming up and down Main Street, as well as performers including Irish dancers, fire dancers and American Indian dancers at every Main Street intersecti­on. The event also features sword-swallowing and fire-breathing, a magician, a costume contest, dog costume contest, $12 hot air balloon rides and food trucks. Admission is free.
