Missing from section
I enjoy reading the Democrat-Gazette every Sunday, except for your Sports section, which you should call the Men’s Pages. Where are the stories about our women athletes?!
Each Sunday I keep score, counting photos of women athletes in the sports section; last week there were none. Another week: Out of 33 photos and mugshots in the sports news pages, I counted only three small mugshots of females and one larger photo of a girl who had shot a deer. In contrast, page after page features compelling action shots of men playing football, basketball or other sports, along with mugshots of your regular male-only writers.
As a result of Title IX, great women athletes break records and shatter glass gym ceilings continually, but it seems they’re not featured in your paper. Female athletes give our daughters powerful role models, but only if they know about all their achievements.
I’m a retired physical educator, missing girls’ and women’s sports coverage. Please send photographers to get some action shots of these local events as well as male sports. Maybe you could also hire at least one female columnist/sports writer to help provide a little more balance to your sports news.
Till then, I invite readers to join in my Sunday sports game, counting male/female photos, hoping someday for a better score than 20–0 or 33-4. JOYCE HARTMANN
